CD-R recording

I just installed a HP cd-writer in my computer. Everything seems to be working fine except for one thing. I took one finished song from my Acid program and choose the "add track" option to burn the song to a CD-R. The other option was to "close disc" which I did NOT do because I wanted to be able to add more songs to the CD later on. When I attempted to do that an error message comes up saying that I don't have a blank cd in the tray. Do I have to burn everything that I want on that particular cd all at once? Or is something else going on here? If I want to do it this way do I need to use a CD-RW and then copy that to the final CD-R? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like something else is going on. You should be able to completely power down your system after partially burning a disc that you haven't finalized and restart your computer, add more tracks and THEN finalize. Or if the disc is not full repeat the entire above procedure. Be sure to leave a few MB (maybe 1 or 2; I don't really know the minimum here) for additional entries in the TOC.

The CDRW thing is not a more sure route to a final product. Its only purpose is the convenience of rerecording.

Most likely culprit is the disc itself. Outside of that, keep looking.

Is it necessary to power down the system and restart like you said? I didn't do that originally. I tried it again, after powering down and restarting and now it worked.
Also, the cd plays in my home cd player but doesn't show that there are 3 tracks on there. Won't let me skip from track 1 to track 3 for example. Is that because I haven't finalized yet?
Thanks again!

You shouldn't have to shut down your computer to do this(the dr. was just giving an example I believe.)You probably need to finalize the CD before it wiil show you the track numbers. By the way, it's kind of odd that your unfinalized CD worked in a regular CD player.

You guys are gonna think I'm nuts but I tried adding something to the CD again and now I'm getting all kinds of error messages again......read only CD, don't have a blank CD in the tray. I'm positive I didn't finalize this CD. I just got this unit yesterday and have been experimenting with the one and only CD that came with it. I guess I'll go out and buy new CD-R's and see what happens. Unless anyone has any other thoughts on why this is happening. I'm new at this but I'm not a total computer illiterate. I can't figure this one out. Thanks

No, ethyl. rtzstudios had it right. I was just saying that even if you did shut off your system and start it again it should work. Not that you have to shut off your system. Mine's been on for months...
It's better on the whole system to just leave it on.
Use Power Management for the monitor.
I'd get a batch of different discs.
What brand are you using?
Lately I like the 16x capable silver Taiyo Yuden from MF @ $0.69 with a case.
Also- at what speed are you burning them? 2x, 4x, 8x etc.
If you've finalized an audio CDR it should be recognized by an ordinary audio CD player.

I'm using a Hewlett Packard CD-R that came with the hardware. Like I mentioned it's the only one I have right now as I just bought the unit yesterday and had planned on going out and buying more CD-R's today but I can't leave my house because I'm snowed in (Buffalo,NY...where else?) :)
I'm going to take your advice, try some different CD's and take it from there. I suppose it could even be my Acid program which is where I was burning the CD from. I appreciate all your help.
You too,rtzstudios. Thanks

I tried recording twice to an open CD and after the second session was unable to access the first recording session. I learned that there are 2 different formats for recording and that one of them works with multiple recording, the other doesn't. Hope this gives you a lead for further research. I just stopped multiple recording sessions on the same disc, as it was an expensive mistake for me - I lost some data I thought I had safely recorded.
