Not a recording question. I have a stereo system consisting of two speakers and a stereo 2 channel receiver. I havn't yet purchased a component cd player and I have the system hooked up to a portable cd player through its headphone output. Can I use the bass boost feature on the portable cd player or will this damage my receiver speakers. Im only asking this because Im pretty sure the headphone out is already amped and im not sure how this will go over with amping again through the real receiver and out the speakers. Will nothing be damaged this way or by using the bass boost?

No, but you should be using the line out on the discman instead of the headphone out, if it has one.

Bass boost just brings up lower frequencies, it doesn't necessarily make anything "louder" as far as your amp will be concerned. Just make sure you don't have the headphone gain up to high, regardless of whether you use the bass boost.

Whether your speakers can handle it depends on your speakers. If they're farting out when you enable the bass boost at the listening level you prefer, then they're being damaged. If they sound fine, however, they are fine.

Another suggestion: keep the volume of the discman low, and adjust your volume with the receiver. This will give less/ no overload.

It doesnt have a line out.. problem? Well in a few days Ill purchase a real component cd player anyway..
