So i have a plextor plexwrite cd burner that i used for my roland 1880 via SCSI. I know they clame to have superior qaulity and audio and such, but seeing as how the thing retails new for 280 i think i can get enough money for it to buy one for my computer and get some extra cash around for extra gear (because i am upgrading)
Is there any one better then the other for audio or does it matter....i was thinking of getting the samsung light scribe
thanks

Does not matter. Data is data. Dont expect to get a lot for a used CD burner, they are pretty much consumables these days. Litghtscribe is a joke and don't base your decision on that, it takes FOREVER to burn and looks like crap. I have the new samsung 18x and it is very nice though, so thats a solid choice

Audio quality will not be different. Its all 1 & 0's. now I see your old one is scuzzy (scsi), that makes a price difference. Do you have to have scsi?

All CD burners and blank media are not alike! There is indeed differences between brands as far as errors, and also which brands of CD burners match up well with which brands of CDR's. Since the CD burner and media are the final destination for your music, I think that it always an area to put some thought and get the right stuff.

Yeah.

I have a stand alone cd recorder, a Philips cdr770, and I just bought a spindle of "digital audio cd-r's". It is a multi-colored spindle, so there's 5 or 6 black discs, then 5 or 6 red discs, purple discs, yellow discs, blue discs, etc.

The ONLY ones that will work are the purple ones.

How in the fuck can that be possible? It isn't operator error. I have tried and tried and tried. The ONLY ones that will work are the purple ones.

well no i don't want it scuzzy...i had it because that was my old roland 1880 output...no i want a usb or internal ...yeah i did some research and it seems that for the most part any "good" cd burner wont make a difference, but from what i read you can buy some that will screw some things up, so i am looking into a cheap external with a resonable buffer size and that might also do dvds....any recomemdations....

also from what i hear....the most high quality speed to burn a cd at is 2x
anybody else herd that.....my music industries teacher told me that

I read somewhere that burning cds slower is better, less jitter producing errors or something along those lines. I don't know how exactly, but red book CDs aren't blobs of digital data, it's streamed off of the cd, so if it's a "soso burn", even though all the data can be retrieved, like to a computer, your CD player may not be as happy.

Well, lets start by saying that there are only a hand full of manufacturers. And a crap load of people buying the manuf. units and slapping there name on it. Ive been building pc's since the beginning of time and if I remember right, this is a list of some of the makers. Mitsumi, Sony, Acer (A-Open), NEC, Mitsubisha, and a few others. Companies like memorex and others have these few makers manufacture theirs. So what you spend $150 from one company might be the same unit this company sells for $50. So spend $40 on an internal (dont buy usb) and try it. If it trashes a blank cd at 52 speed then slow it down untill it writes good. I usually set my software to 32 at the quickest anyway. Habit I guess. Have a player in my van that only plays back recorded cd's done a 32 speed

Anyone have any ideas on why, or how this can be possible?

Bad CDs? I've noticed similar things. Just buy quality CDs. Memorex is a pretty good brand. I always buy the blank silver ones and they always work.

I've noticed the black ones don't work well for my CD burner not sure why. I always get CRC errors and unplayable CDRs. Try the silver CDs. They always work for me.

I think they have "CD-R Audio" on the top. And a silver color.

Also, your CD drive might be going bad, that's a possibility. But it's unlikely since the problem seems to be from the CDs. I'd try a different set and see if that works.
