I'm thinking of getting a CD burner for my computor and dumping my Phillips stand alone unit. What do I need to buy to get it into the 'putor?

What kind of computer is it? If it's a pentium/AMD something or other, all you should need is the burner. Take your case apart, put the drive in an open bay, couple fine thread screws, hook it up the ribbon and power and your done.

If you have a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, set the jumper on the back of the burner (little black jumper thing) to master, and set your cd-rom or burner to slave.

If your hard drive and cd-rom are on the same ribbon, about the only other thing you will need is an 40pin IDE ribbon cable. (which would plug into the secondary IDE port on your motherboard)

It's easy, post back if you run into problems or need more info.

I'm sorry, I was very unclear with what I was trying to explain. I'd like to know how to go from my console into the computor in order to burn the CD. There must be some kind of A/D box or something to bring the stereo mix in to the computor, Thanks and sorry for the confusion,Jim

First, we need to know if your console outputs in Digital or analog, (I am assuming you are using some sort of stand-alone device to record on here, feel free to correct me)

If the console has digital output, you will only need a sound card with digital input. Avoud the SB Lives, because, (I have heard) that they have to up sample everything to 48k and back down to 44.1 and that can effect quality.

If your sound card has a Digital input for your CD-Rom, you can use a CD-Rom DA cable and connect it to an RCA jack, (Assuming your output is S/PIDF, TosLink requires a bit more work.)

If you are outputting to analog, you will want to get a good sound card to convert the signal to analog. (There are other forums here where you can get advice on that)

Depending on tha card, you may need an adapter cable, (Stereo RCA-1/8 in. Mini jack)

tdowning. I will be going out of my analog console with 2 , 1/4 jacks (left and right). I must have to go into something in order to then get it into the computor. I have not yet bought a burner for the computor. It is a Dell dimension P120c. Yeah, its old but what the hell. 120 Mhz Im told can run a burner. Thanks, Jim

Since the method that will get the signal into the PC is analog, the sound card will be the most crucial part of the signal chain. you will need a good sound card. Most consumer sound cards will not cut the mustard. If I recall correctly, the Turtle Beach (Brand) Voyetras (Model) is a good comsumer card that will get you passable results. check out the PC recording fourum for better advice.

FWIW, I use my PC for recording with a Digidesign Digi001
