Hi, I`m using the sw1000xg but I can`t get any sound out of my cd rom. It works fine through the headphones
but not through the speakers. Any ideas anyone? Some
sound cards take a direct lead from a cd rom drive. The sw1000xg doesn`t as far as I can see.

I'm not familiar with the particular CD model you reference, but there are two ways for a CD to output music - digital or analog.

For analog output you have to have a cable connecting your CD player to your sound card. This cable is not required for digital output.

The control over analog vs digital output is directed by the software you are using to play the CD's. Some software allows a choice of analog or digital output, while others only allow analog.

If you are using Windows Media Player, then you need to have the most recent version (version 7, I believe). Earlier versions only allow analog output - which means you would need to have the connecting cable. Download the new version of Media Player, then check in the options dialogue for "allow digital output". This should fix your problem.

You can also do this using the latest version of WinAmp, and probably other software as well.

It's worth noting the biggest benefit of digital audio extraction...you get to hear the CD through the same converters you use to record and playback your own mixes. If you use analog playback, you rely on the converters in your cheapo CDROM drive (trust me, they're all cheapo).

However, digital extraction does take some effort by the machine. At times when it's not appropriate, you will need the analog cable described above.

Ok, I tried selecting digital in windows media player
v.7 but it told me that it cannot accurately read my cd rom drive in digital form. Hey, all I want right now is to play some cds in my pc. Yes it would be nice to use the same converters as used when making my own music.
Thanks for the replies..... Slinky

Get the analog cable. I have yet to see a CD-ROM or a sound card that does not have connections for it. the cable should cost you a couple of bucks max, and one should have been packaged with your CD-ROM.

all cd's are not created equal

Slinky - the ability of CD players to extract digital audio varies tremendously. In general, CD Writers are better than CD ROM's, and newer ones are better than older ones.

I'm a little surprised that yours won't do it at all. The biggest problem I've encountered is clicks and pops in the audio from CD players that are poor performers.

You might try getting updated drivers for your CD ROM to see if that helps - but the problem is most likely with the laser.

RWhite's advice is probably the best, go get the cable and stick with analog. Stay away from COMP USA though, they wanted $25.00 for the cable the last time I tried to buy one there. I've seen them online for like $.95.

Of course, you could also buy a new CD burner. :)

Or, consider buying a new CDROM drive, which will come with said cable. Plus, you can get a drive that will do the digital extraction. A decent semi-name-brand CDROM drive = $30. Try staples or the like.

Hi there, ..... My sound card, the yamaha
sw1000xg, dosn`t have the audio input socket to take the said audio cable from the cd rom. I have seen these
on other cards but not on mine. So I guess getting a new cd rom or perhaps an additional standard sound card might be the answer. I could plug any old cd player into my sound card line in, but you know there aught to be a way within the pc, n`est pas. .......peace....slinky
