Alright so i'm trying to record cassette tapes onto my computer to convert them to mp3's. I've been reading around on the internet a bunch and i thought i found what i needed from this site. It said i needed to get an RCA cord with a red and white plug and a mini jack at the other end. Plug the red and white in the out line of the tape player and the mini jack in the line in on the computer. I did this. Changed the settings so it would allow me to record from the line in. Then i downloaded an analog recording program. I tried all of them on shareware and download.com. But i couldn't get a signal. Is everything set up right? I think the computer is missing something for recording sound because we just took the computer in to get it fixed and i think they didn't install that. But i'll deal with that. Thanks for any suggestions!

Does your computer even have a soundcard? What type of computer, etc. are you using?

Yes the computer has a soundcard. I've recorded from a mic to the computer before....but now that doesn't even work. I have a gateway windows xp. THe soundcard is a Realtek HD

What ever program you are using to do the transfers, you must ensure that you have selected the "line in" from the recording option and as a double check, in case the program relies on your windows sound-card settings, also go into the sound card's properties and ensure that the "line in" is a checked option to record from. Usually this is found under the "properties" tab for the sound card.

See attached picture.

Cheers! :)

Yes it can play mp3 fine. And i made sure to check the properties and line in box. I'm going to try a new program here and see if that works. THanks for the replies

Connect the cassette deck, amplified turnable output audio device to the computer's Line In socket using a stereo audio cable. Any audio editing/ recording software can be of use. Try FlexiMusic Wave Editor for recording and then using "Save As" command save your recordings as Mp3 files.
