Cassette cleaner/demag

I just "inherited" a Tascam Porta 02. I'd like to start off on the right foot with keeping it clean etc. With the machine I also got a Maxell cassette-style head cleaner and demagnetizer. Now, I've read the article here that says you shouldn't use cassette head cleaners because of the abrasiveness. Does this also hold true for the demag part of it?

How do I know if I need to demag, and if I can't use the cassette, then how should I go about it?

99% pure alchohol (try not to drink it though, it really doesn't taste that good) and a cotton swab for cleaning. Also, Radio Shack has some capstain cleaner and conditioner.

You can look around for a tape head demagnatizer. Radio Shack used to have them, but quit selling them. Your local Pro-Audio shop will probably be able to help you out.

Follow the directions for demag. and you are set.
