... my friend eben grace (of grace designs) told me he really likes this mic on a variety of applications. anyone out there have one, or used one? i, like many here, am a little leary of the lower priced ldc's, and this one is on sale right now for $129 online (retails or lists for $399). eben got his for free from the manufacturer, and he's got all those grace mic pre's layin around to plug into, so i'm looking for some additional feedback before i order one. there doesn't seem to be much info online about this company, or the mics (other than cascademicrophones.com). anybody?
much appreciated - jv

I got one free with a purchase from Bayview Audio about a year ago. I removed all the electronics and replaced them with Scott Dorsey’s modification.
Dorsey Mod
It sounds great now, but without the mod, it wouldn’t be worth $40 because of the lousy transformer they use in it. Much better mics for the money would be the Oktava M319, Studio Projects B1, MXL 67G, and MXL 1006. (The MK319 and 67G use transformers but they are of a higher quality than the generic Chinese brand. The B1 and MXL 1006 are transistor coupled so they don’t need a transformer.)

thanks flatpicker...

... that's kinda what i thought. i've used some of the oktava mics, and when you get a good one, they sound pretty good. i guess you just have to go through a bunch of them to find a good one. thanks for the hands on info - jv

Here’s a review I wrote about the Oktava MK319 . Most of the ones I tried sounded the same. It’s a fairly neutral sounding mic.

The other mics I mentioned also sound great for under $100, and I’m sure there’s others I haven’t even thought of.

thanks tim...

... i actually read your review a while back... very nicely done. sounds like you've had quite a bit of experience with a number of mics. i guess i have, too, but i haven't owned many of them. i have been lucky enough to record in a bunch of different studios, with a variety of mics. i am starting to record here at home a bit, and just looking to spend my starving artist dollar as far as i can. i'll try and go demo a few of the mics you mentioned. as i said, i am a little leery of quality control and longevity on the chinese stuff, and i really don't want to open up the "which is the best cheap mic" debate. i think we can agree it's been discussed ad nauseum on this forum. if you do, however, have any more info you think might useful to me... i'm all ears.
thanks again- jv
