I was looking at a Carvin catalog today and they had what looked like some great guitars for the money. Especially, through
neck, active, wilerson or floyd rose tremolo, two splittable humbuckers with volume and tone for each, 24 frets, good wood, lots of choice of color, double or single cutaway. All for under 800.00. Does anyone have one of these and if so how are they?

The guy I am working with now has one, it's a pretty nice guitar. I have never, ever been a Carvin fan...but this guitar is really nice, and the top is really nice looking. The action is very fast and the workmanship seems top notch.

H2H

I havent played a Carvin guitar in years...but the last time I did, I got to see one coming right out of the shipping case....A quick tune up and the action and intonation were already perfect.....sounded great....the bridge HB screamed and the single coils had a fairly decent stratlike tone.....maybe Jimi would play a Carvin if he was alive......I also like their amps......

a friend of mine has one, it feels nice and sounds pretty good too.

For what it is worth Carvin has continued to rack up Best Buy and Best Tone awards in both Guitar Player and Bass Player Magazine in multiple shoot outs.

My experience with Carvin was mixed. I custom ordered a nice bass and their service was excellent. The quality of the wood, workmanship and finish were outstanding for the price range and even price ranges somewhat above.

Unfortunately I was disapointed in the sound of the pickups. It was not a bad sound neccesarily but it was not what I wanted. I was really torn because I loved the the way it played, looked, felt....but in the end I could not get the sound I wanted.

The good news is they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and I sent it back. They refunded my money no questions asked. I have bought several other things from them since including a fretless bass neck that I used to custom build my own fretless bass and was quite happy.

I would recomend them; the quality and the finish is top notch. You just don't know if a particular model will sound to your liking until you try it out at home and thats why they have the 100% satisaction guarantee.

Could you custom order different pickups, or no pickups and add your own later?

they have what they call custom shop, though I dont know to what extent you can customize....from what I remember, they use standad size pickups, so upgrading them wouldnt be a problem.....

like Scooter said, they will take a guitar back no questions asked, so it wouldnt hurt to try one if you are in the market for a new guitar......

I played a few basses that a housemate used to own, very nice, a little more shredder than my "P-bass or bust" taste. Also, once I was in West Covina, dropped by their shop there, played one of the (at-the-time) new Strat-style "Bolt" guitars. It was fantastic, played great, the action was amazing, the playability was all there, and the sound was nice and big and crisp, and the thing was like $350. It's not anything like a Fender strat, a lot more modern sounding. I'm almost embarassed to say it, but the only reason I haven't bought one is I just don't like the shape of the headstock and the way the logo/headstock look together. Is that weak or what?

i played with a guy who used 2 carvin half stacks...they sounded better than the other guitarist with marshalls...('course the carvin guy was a much better guitar player..)

I don't know how they sound, but that DC200 in ruby stain quilt is sexy as hell!

Dragonworks,

All their guitars are built to order from their list of options at the time I ordered the bass they only offered one pickup for basses. Now they offer a Music Man style pick up wich is the sound I was looking for.

The guitars however have several options for pickups and a friens of mine replaced his lead LP with a Carvin pick up and liked it much better.

I did not want to pay more for additional pickups and then maybe not like the results and not be able to return the bass. There is a 30 day trial period that you have to return it by.

I just would have liked to have known their prices etc before I bought that Jackson 5 years ago allthough I like the Jackson. I am thinking of selling it but I wont get jack for it and I have no money to add to it to get a new guitar and I am broke.

No more counting golden doubloons eh?

I'm broke too so I know the feeling.

Actually, my wife caught me with the whores and now shes counting all the doubloons, I just earn em.

Harrrr!

Now if we could just find some of that burried treasure and keep the wifes greedy hands out of it.

Harr, Harr, Harr!

I have two carvin guitars and love them. If you get the Mahogony neck, you will have to adjust them once in a while. The maple is much more stable. I love the ebony fret boards... can't beat them. I also have a Charvel that I loaded with Cavin electronics, and it kick butt. I have a third Carvin guitar on order that I know I should not be buying at this time, but I could not pas up on their 50% off on the options and case deal.
