I was talking to my friend about my mixer. It's a Mackie 32.8 and it blew up. It's going to be at least $600 in labor. I doubt parts are cheap. He said I should go with a 40 channel Carvin. Anyone ever use one?

You're better off scouting eBay for a good mixer that's functioning. Carvin's mic pre's are not as clear as the Mackie and it has less headroom.

I prefer the British consoles, but that's just preference.

It all depends on your budget.

AS far as your mackie goes, what exactly blew up? I worked as a pro audio repair tech and had to replace well over half of the 4560 opamps in a 32/8 Mackie and my labor charge was nowhere near that!

I have been disappointed to elarn that most repair facilities literally rape the clientel with labor charges of $45 per hour and higher....and the customers have no real idea how many hours the tech actually spent.

We priced it out by classification of repair. I think the most I ever charged for labor was about $200. I only put a 100% markup on parts as well. Most places put about 300% I have learned.

And for those who would lambast me for undercharging, I moved on to other venues of work. The repair shop is thriving so the pricing isn't bad at all. The partner I had still owns it and drives a Jag (yeah it was bought used).

Just got off the phone with repair guy. One of the circuit boards blew up. He said I'll need new boards, cables, pots, and software. He said it would be around $2,500 and I really shouldn't even atempt to fix it. He said it's so bad, he won't even charge me the $50 diagnostic fee. They charge $60 an hour for labor.

Sounds like a lightning hit.

I would check with your insurance company. Have the tech hold onto the board and his repair estimate.

We did insurance claims quite often. It would be of great benefit to you if that $2500 or so was in the form of a check with your name on it instead of someone else's :)

As far as boards, there is Soundtracs Solo Logic series on eBay. 32 channels, 8 buss. Considering it have the Logic module installed, I would also say it has VCA on the channels.

Good Pre's on those and great EQ's too.

I'm not seeing the 32 on eBay, just a 24 and 16 channel.

Carvin mixers are crap. We have one & the pres are inferior & we have tons of RFI problems.
