I know some people on this board bought some of these. How are they? I was at the Carvin store in Hollywood today and the necks actually feel pretty good.

I'm thinking about getting one soon, and then getting one of their 24-fret thru-body necks with blank headstocks in the future so that I can make my own little contraption.

All Carvins play very sweet.
I've spoken to some peeps that have built Carvin kits and they say that it's fantastic. All the parts are crafted with extremely low tolerances and everything just comes together with no probs.

i'd be willing to bet....

that the carvin components and tolerences on their kits, are as good or better than anything on the market.

i have a DC-200 Koa (not a kit, a glue in neck) from 1981, that is still the best guitar i've played.

and i've played a bunch.

it may not be the best sounding, for whatever reason.....
certain strats have a special sound......

but in terms of bang for buck, i don't think you could piece together anything that would be of a higher quality.

Not without spending 3 times the money.

I've never used a kit but I have a carvin bass and it's been well worth the cost. Also they said it would take 6-8 weeks 'cause it was custom, but i got it in 4.

Thanks for the replies. When I was at the carvin store I was playing around with a neck and an ash body, and it did indeed seem like the tolerances were very tight, but not so tight that you'd have to pound the two pieces together with a mallet. That's some good quality control there.

What do you think it is about certain strats that make them sound the way they do? It seems like Carvin didn't skimp out at all when it came to quality of wood. How do think a carvin would sound with EMG pickups and fewer cutouts in the wood?

FEWER CUTOUTS.......

you'd be referring to the contour series.....

that's a sweet looking axe......

personally, i tried some carvin pickups, i much prefer the bill lawrence......

as far as the fenders, it's such a subjective thing...... but every strat sounds different to me, acoustically.......

it's just a magic combination of certain woods, i think.....

and there's a sound that you get with stock fender pickups.....
the quack.....
but i can't stand, cannot tolerate the buzz.......

so, the bill lawrence pickups, the l-280s in particular, really capture the quack of the fender style single coils, but without the hum.......

i think a bolt, with BL's, would be totally sweet.

closer to the fender sound.

that's a sweet looking setup......

Alright Gonz...
Rub it in,,,.....:( :( :(

OH YEA..........

my bad, i forgot your hard luck story.....

jeez, i think, if someone stole/destroyed/ate mine, i'd hunt high and low for another one.....

i'm still considering the option of spending another $280 to put a brand new Kahler trem on it (that's what's on it now, though i've completely worn that original Kahler out)......
just to keep it up to snuff......

Thats alright man... ;)

I've been looking since it was stolen.
I've gotten into the habit of looking in ebay right after I check my email ....EVERYDAY.

If you see anything out there let me know Gonz.

Actually I'd like to hunt for the bastard that stole it.

How would you recommend finishing the guitar? I have a compressor and spray gun. What brand/type of paint/primer is good? Is lacquer the most common way to clear coat it after painting?

And finally, what's the best way to finish the neck? I remember reading a post awhile back when someone had to refinish his strat neck, and rub-on polyurethane was mentioned. Would that give me the feal of an Ibanez neck? I love the smoothness of Ibanez... as opposed to the painted finish on Gibsons, which look nice but aren't as fast.
