Hi all, not sure if I should post this question here of Recording Techniques, sorry if this is in the wrong place. I have a Avant CV-28 tube SDC and it comes with the above capsules. Can anybody suggest what would be the best choice for recording a acoustic guitar in a room that's treated kinda good (for a home setup). Did the search thing here but I may have missed it. Thanks in advance!

Maybe you should look at the "How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate to mic applications?" thread in this forum. Simple answer is:

1. Omni can give you the most accurate recording.

2. Cardioid will provide some bass boost as you move in close, and can be flattering to some guitars.

3. Hyper-cardioid will give you even more bass boost the closer you get to the instrument, but hyper-cardioid lets you place the mic further back while keeping some of the bass boost.

"Mic placement is often more important than mic choice or pattern selection."

Depends. What have you liked or not liked about the capsules already? I'm assuming you already know what the different pickup patterns are. Omni, card and hyper also tend to sound different in other ways too, like omnis lacking proximity effect, for instance.

Try this test as a start: with each capsule, do a recording test with the mic at distances of 6 inches, 1 ft, 2 ft, 3ft directly out from the neck/body joint. Play the same guitar bit for each and keep track of which is which by saying what the capsule and positioning is at the beginning of each recording. You'll learn a lot about the capsules when you listen back. Infinite variations you can do with positioning, angling the mic to your left or right by varying degrees instead of having the mic on-axis, different heights from the floor, etc.

Thanks gents!

Thanks for the reply gents. Will spend more time with the mic.
