Hey, I've to like 50 USPS boxes sitting in my closet, and I was wondering they could be used for isolation, and how.

i also have traps from ATS, they gave me a pretty good deal on custom size panels too. not what you want for isolation, but its a decent way to treat the room acoustics.

Good point, somehow along the way I forgot he said isolation. :o

So, what exactly is the difference between isolation, and room acoustics...And which one is more important?

I'm just trying to turn my closet into a vocal booth/amp booth.

Come on - you won't even invest the energy to search the forum for even the most basic of terms?

That's just unbelievable............

count me out for help if you can't invest 30 minutes of reading as a part of the process........

I don't mind helping anyone - except for they should at the very least show they have a nterest in learning......... and saying - hey guys - all of you invest energy to learn from what goes on here - and then just spoon feed the info to me - hardly expresses any sort of real interest - rather just a McDonald mentality - "I want it now"

Well the search on this site is rather specific, and "Difference between acoustics and isolation" didn't return with any results...So without knowing exactly what to search for, I figured it'd be easier to just ask in an already made thread.

You did ONE search? Wow, not really a huge effort on your part :(
I just typed "acoustics vs isolation" into the search and it returned 173 THREADS! :o

You could also go here and buy Rods book - it'll keep you busy for a while.

No, no it's not. Well, thanks, I just didn't really know what to be looking for in my search.

mate, even google would sort you out on isolation treatment vs acoustic treatment. but i'll do the leg work for ya anyways:

isolation - stop a sound going from one acoustic space to another, for example between Live room and Control room.

acoustic treatment - leveling out frequ response of a room, dampening early reflections, controlling RT60 etc.

Thanks MessianicDreams, that's a really easy understanding.

So, my plans for my closet were to make 2" mineral wool pads across the walls, and 4" mineral wool pads in the corners.

Would that be isolation, acoustics, or both?

It's not isolation. For isolation, you need to contain sound from moving through both air and structure. Bass will be paritally absorbed by thick mineral wool but will do nothing to provide any kind of isolation.

Isolation requires mass (like drywall walls), caulked joints, solid core doors with seals, etc.
