Capturing for mixing later

I'm so sorry.
I want to put together a somewhat mobile rig for capturing band tracks whether it's live or at someones practice space. Id really like to have something that will enable me 16 tracks total. Im obviously looking at some kind of recorder (hard disk, tape, etc) and probably 8 channels of mic pre unless of course the recorder has those. I really want to stay away from the all in one daw's as I hate the interfaces and I don't need all the capabilities that those come with. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? Im going to have the m audio 1010LT to get into pro tools for mixing. I just need a capturing setup.

Well the DAWs are the cheapest way to do it. The next step up it a HDR like the Alesis HD24, along with a rackmount 12 or 16 channel mixer. You don't have to get a rack mixer, but it's very handy if portability is a big concern.

However along with cables, rack case, that would be $2K or more, so it's definitely not cheap.
 
I've been thinking along these lines too. Are there any issue with regards to lining up tracks, when mixing on the pc?

Yeah, Im looking to get off cheaper than two grand, but we'll see what I can muster up. I've spotted a Nady 8 channel mic pre that's cheap as hell, but I am terrified of actually owning and trusting anything made by that company.

As far as lining up tracks into the pc...if you have an interface into your pc of some kind that has lets say 8 tracks, and your "capturing device" only has 8 tracks used, it's no problem at all cause it's a once through recording. If you have the same 8 in's on your interface on your comp and you need to get say a full 16 tracks in, from my understanding you need to link the comp and recorder together via Midi, which Im assuming means that you record the first 8 tracks, and then roll back and catch the other 8. The Midi between the two should keep everything lined up between the two dumps.
 
I'd be scared to death to record a live remote on a pc... the application crashes and it's all gone... the whole night... poof!!

I suggest the Mackie SDR 2496. I own one and have never had it crash... and if the unit losses power, when you turn it on... the first thing it does is rebuild the tracks that were in progress before the power down.

They're selling new for about $1,200, but you can find them cheaper used.
 
Id go eight tracks analog cassette before Id drag out a laptop.

Indeed, frightening stuff.
