can't record

please bare with me. I'm new to this. I have a tascam 388 and I have replaced the capstan belt. Everything seems to be working fine, except I can't seem to figure out how to record. I can hear myself through the unit over a mic and head phones, but when I go to play it back I hear nothing! help!

Got a manual?

Are the tracks armed for recording? Is/are the mics being routed to the record busses or just to the monitor buss?

What are the settings you have set?

I have a line going straight from and dynamic mic into the xlr input on line on in the back of the unit.
On Chanel 1:
Input is st to MIC
Trim set at 12 o'clock
all EQ knobs set to 12 o'clock
AUX set to PRE and knob all the way off
EFF all the way off
on ASSIGN 1-2 is selected as well as L-R
Pan at 12 o'clock
Fader between 7 & 8

on the right side of the mixer I have the following
REC FUNCTION #1
MASTER EFF and AUX are all the way off

METER is UP
MON is UP
INSERT is UP
MONO is selected
master fader and monitor faders are all between 7 & 8

On the Recorder side I have loaded my tape and set the counter to 00.00
PITCH CONTROL is at 12 o'clock
dbx is set at 1-4
middle knob is set to FIX
Stereo is selected and MONITOR/PHONES is at 7
Pluged into the left side jack of the PHONE OUTPUT.

Again, do you have a manual? Pages 7, 8 and 9 go over what you are trying to do very well.

You didn't mention the status of the RECORD FUNCtion switches, the row of switches just in front of the meter bridge and just to the left of the transport. The #1 button needs to be depressed and the LED blinking to enable recording on track #1...
 
recording problem

what your doing is correct i have a 388 i just went up and went threw the moves you describe on my 388, the only thing you didnt mention is hitting the record and play button at the same time, which im sure you tried

I'm not at my 388 right now, but

I'm guessing with what you've said so far that sound is getting to tape. Could it be a monitor issue? You need to have the monitor knobs and faders turned up to monitor while recording or flip the selector switch from "mic" to "remix" to hear whats on each track for mixdown.

Well, I"m not sure it is getting to tape you see. The tape has been recorded on before and I can hear the music on it when I play back, I just can't hear what I"m trying to record. I can hear it when I'm talking into the mic through my head phones. Just not on playback.

I hadn't tried switching from MIC to RMIX but that didn't do the trick either. I have now tried three different channels, but no luck.

I do have a manual and have read the pages you are taking about. Still no luck.
 
Okay, I had a similar problem when I

first got mine, too. It turned out there was sticky shed (tape residue) on the record head. After cleaning the heads thoroughly, the problem was solved. However, that tape kept shedding. I used fresh tape (RMGI LPR 35) after that and never had the problem again. I clean the heads often. If it is a short session, I just clean when I am done. If it's a long one, I clean during breaks. It really makes a huge difference. Hope this helps.

What are you cleaning with?
 
I use

regular Tascam head cleaner. I don't think they make it any more. But they do sell it online. Just google tape head cleaner. The manual explains in detail how to clean the heads in detail. Some of the other members here recomend certain alchohol, but the head cleaner is inexpensive. Hope this works. Keep us posted.
