I can't record any sound using the line in on the soundcard. If I use the mic in I have no problem recording. And I am sure the input to the soundcard is a line level out from a CD player or tape player. I can get sound ot of my speakers but can't change the volume. It is at one loud level and thats it. Even if I mute all on the playback mixer the sound is still there. It WILL NOT MUTE. I have manipulated all volume adjusts on both the playback and recording mixer with no changes in the sound on playback or recording levels on recording. I have attempted to record with the windows sound recorder and n-track recording software with no luck. The VRU meters will just not move with input from the line in. Again if I use the mic input all works as expected. I have a 2 year old Compaq 233mhz system with a built in ESS 1887 cound card. Help??

Welcome to the hell that is the ESS chipset. Good luck getting ANY decent results with that piece of crap.

It sounds kinda like you have a driver problem if everything you say is true. If you mute Line In in both the Recording and Volume mixers then you should NOT be hearing anything coming into the Line In port.

Anyway, ESS based soundcards are some of the WORST for recording. I went through two...an 1868 and an 1869. The response was horrible...either really loud or very little sound at all. Lots of noise & crackling. Updating the drivers did seem to help, but not enough to make me happy. You might try it.
