Hi, i'm using cubase 4.0 at the moment and basically I have a major problem
I don't know how to record any sound as i don't have any input,
the funny thing is I can hear myself and my mic working thru the speakers
but when I try to record anything in the program nothing happens

I'll give u some detail (I open Cubase, new project, add audio track, then press record
but nothing happens, I've checked the monitor screen and there is no input) I've recorded vocals
before but now it dosen't seem to work)

I think there may be a problem with the program

VST connections...make sure your soundcard inputs are showing up in here first, then select the soundcard input on the channel strip of the track you're recording to in cubase.

Simple stuff. It's all in the manual.

Do you smell pirates?

Yes, having the dongle plugged in will indeed let cubase 4 boot up. You'll still need to check your connections pannel though

Time to walk the plank. No more pieces of eight for you, me scurvy.

lol. To be fair, though... it might be one of those free versions that comes with a LOT of interfaces these days. I'm not sure if they give out some kind of free version of 4.0, but I would assume they do.

Those versions don't need dongles, as far as I know....but I could be wrong.

Arrrr ye needs the USB dongle to gets the software seaworthy

I think there is a Cubase LE 4 that doesn't use a dongle but Cubase 4 needs one as well as Cubase Studio 4.
ARRRRR!:D

Ok, then - if for no other reason than just being plain old polite, couldn't we just give this guy the benefit of the doubt and guess that that is why he doesn't know what a dongle is? If it is the case that he has a free LE version that came with his hardware, then this is quite possibly the rudest reception of a new member that i have ever seen, ya bunch of bullies  .

My first experience with Cubase was Cubase VST in 2002. It came for FREE with a soundblaster and certainly did not require a dongle. At that time, if somebody had asked me if I inserted the dongle (gasp!) I would have responded exactly the same way this guy did. Somebody please explain how you all just know, from what this guy wrote, that this case is any different?

If, on the other hand, he had said he was having a problem with a specific version that is always dongle-protected, and then that he didn't know what a dongle was...well fire away and rip him a new one. I'll readily admit that his username certainly seems to indicate a likelihood, but I still think it's rude to just assume. :(
Call me a pansy if you will :D

Well, I stand corrected, then. I'll get the tar - you get the feathers. :D

Your efforts of being kind to people are supported by me, but in this case I think he is not legitimate.

Someone claiming they don't know what a USB dongle is for a $500 peice of software that they just "bought" and with a really bad rep, I think we can safely assume they arrrrrrrr a pirate :)

I think he's not, too. I looked through his 7-post history and they're all very basic questions about using various (expensive) software packages.

To be fair, though - He never mentioned buying Cubase, though - that's why I kinda wanted him to be talking about a free version, I guess. I wasn't aware of only the 'real-deal Cubase' being called 4.0. Oops :o

As long as we're both around, and since this thread is otherwise useless - what do you think about the 4 family? Any notable changes worth looking into? SX3 has worked so well for me the last few years, I haven't felt compelled to really look, heh. It looks like the upgrade is pretty cheap, though....hmmmm

I've only had small amounts of experience using cubase sx3. I have studio 4 and I don't feel the need to upgrade to the full version of 4.5 so I would recommend buying studio 4.
It looks much better than SX3. There are a few improvements like the EQ's sound better, and instrument tracks compliment the VST library well. If its a cheap upgrade then it is worth it. I forget which effects are on sx3 but studio 4 has plenty to suit me. I seem to remember side chaining is a lot easier than it was in sx3.

C4 is a major rewrite... new vst format... for that alone i'ld think about doing the upgrade... hard to tell when but some future date all the available new vst's will be type 2 and not backwardly compatable...

lol, i know what a dongle is i was joking around, anyway I think I've solved the problem it seems to be the asio driver that I'm using. it dosen't seem to work.

p.s. can sum1 improve my rep please?

Alright then, did you have to buy it seperately or did it come with Cubase 4? And what Colour is it?

I bought it seperately from a guy called waffleness, and the colour is a rainbowy green, red, blue, orange with bits of brown, yellow oh and pink
