Can't get my multitracks to work properly

I can record a single track with no problem. But when I go to record a second track.. as the first track plays back it gets recorded into the next track creating tons of cracks and hissing. I have only the 2nd track selected for record, but it just isn't working. HELP PLEASE.. and I appreciate anyone who takes the time to
