Can't enable MIDI-input on Audition: "a device ID ...out of range for your system"

I'm trying to record external synth with a USB to the PC. I've installed the (what I think to be) proper Yamaha driver. It looks like it's still using the ASIO driver...not sure if it should be (?)
Basically, I'm using Adobe Audition, and it won't give me the option of switching to use the MIDI input...only Mic 1, Mic 2, and another mic.
I hit MIDI TRIGGER ENABLE and I get this error message:
"a device ID has been used that is out of range for your system"
Does it need to be plugged in through an interface? I thought the Yamaha synth. could just transfer info. I play or something...(??)
please help I don't know what I'm doing
