I have cakewalk PA9 running on a PC with an M-Audio
audiophile 2496 sound card. I also have an external
DAT player with SPDIF output.

Here's the riddle:

I want to record 4 mono tracks simultaneously. I have
been able to get 4 tracks all simultaneously armed
and reading levels on the meters but when I pushed
the record button the whole thing crashed. When I tried
to get back into cakewalk I got messages about the drivers
not supporting the chosen sample rate or bit-depth.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

I'm not sure what sample rates and bit depths the M-Audio can handle, but it sounds like your software is trying to do something the sound card can't deal with. For example, you might have the sofware set up for a bit depth of 96 bit when the card can only handle 24 bit. Open the audio window (under "Options" I think). Change your default bit rate to 44.1 khz, and your depth to 16 bit. These are settings that any decent sound card can handle. This may take care of your problem.

I think I have everything set for 44.1KHz & 16 bits. The card
should be able to handle this, at least according to their
literature.

Does the soundcard also have its own software, like a mixer? If so, there may be a way to adjust bit depth and sample rate in there, as well as in Cakewalk. If the settings are different between the two, that might give you trouble.

You might also try try reinstalling your drivers.

Good luck
