In the $400 - $500 range you should look at Godin guits (made in Canada/USA). I prefer my Godin LG over the $500 - $600 Strats.

In the $200 range Yamaha makes a decent Strat copy.

For $300 or less you can pick up an Ibanez or a Washburn and maybe have rnough left over for a decent case. You really need to play a guitar before you even consider buying it. Consider the feel carefully, body shape and weight...is it comfortable to hold? The neck...right thickness and width, does it fit your hand? Fingerboard...arched or flat...size of frets, thin, medium or jumbo, does it play smoothly for you? Tailpiece...a matter of preferance, stopbar, whammy which suits your style? Pick ups...active or passive, single or double coil or humbucking...what tone and sustain do you want. These are just the basics to consider, the perfect guitar is the one that becomes an extention of your self and sings those lines that you can't.

Perhaps you can visit a Carvin store. I'm a Carvin rep and I'm always on this board plugging Carvin. No matter what the initial post is, I'll be there to plug the Carvin name.

Carvin has some good stuff but their guitars suck IMO. Maybe an Epiphone SG or Les Paul copy. I'd sell you my Epiphone SG but I live in OR.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the help.

I agree about playing a guitar before buying but as I said, it's intimidating in the store and also it's hard to tell how much is the AMP not the guitar.

Most music stores have a quiet room where you can jam to your heart's content without being heard. Even though I play pretty proficiently & am confident in my abilities, I ask to be set up in the quiet rooms so I'm not bothered by the eight other guys playing 'look what i know' riffs at max volume on the floor.

Basically, make them accommodate you. YOU'RE the customer - YOU have the money - tell the salesman if he can't make you happy & comfortable somewhere private in the store, you'll go elsewhere. Works like a charm.

Good luck.
