Can you hold a classic mic for live performances rather than stand mount it?

I've been looking at the Shure Super 55 Special Edition, its gorgeous. I play in a hardcore band that likes to move around and make our live shows, well shows. So i'd rather not have to have a mic that only sounds good if its on a stand. Anybody know if this mic could be held by hand while moving around stage? I use a Shure Beta 58 now, but I just would like a mic that stands out and is a bit more flashy.

That specific mic has a shock mounted cartridge, so you'll at least have less handling noise. It looks pretty awkward to use as a hand held though.

I know a band that uses one of those live. Of course, they're metal, and they're just trying too hard to be different and "hip"...but the mic still works.

Thanks for the answers. I would take off the stand mount, and just hold it by the mic itself. Pretty much just like how they were held back in the day. I cant really find where you plug the cord in though?

Oh just because I want that mic doesnt mean i'm trying to be "hip", but my band does try to be different because there is no point in doing whats already been done. Being hip is just being in the "modern" style, it doesnt make a band any better or worse unless of course they dont try to be different with their sound.

Nevermind, looked up some videos on youtube. Looks pretty big and clunky, and the stand mount has the mic plug-in on it. So that cant be removed. I'll just stick with my beta 58 for live performaces and masturbate to how gorgeous the super 55 special edition is haha.

Just keep loosening the clutch and you can take the top part right out of your mic stand ~ would look kinda cool with the mic and about a two foot rod on it. ;)

That or I put a quick. release on mine and it comes right off with a little three inch holder.

It does look pretty awesome. The first person I ever saw do that was Freddie Mercury!

That is a great visual Drumistic!

The only one I could come up with was Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister .....
..... You can understand why I passed on that minds eye tomfoolery. :p

Haha most definitely!

You said that you are in a hardcore band right? Well if you sing with distorted vocals then I don't think that anyone is going to notice the difference in quality of mic that you use, just get something that looks cool. You could always remove the screen from your beta 58 and replace it with a gold one just to be fun. The sax player from The Atom Age does this.
