how you guys doing? this is my first thread here. listen, i got some money to spend and i have a few things in mind. i wanna know what you think. and if it'll work, how do you hook it all up?

anyway, i'm looking for a control surface so i'm thinking about getting a fw-1884 and for a recording interface i'm thinking about a 896hd and for a pre amp i'm thinking about getting focusrite voicemaster pro. all this together is in my price range. oh, i'm also running sonar 4 se and i have a at4040 and am getting a ksm 32. oh, i'm also getting Event Studio Precision 8 monitors and i was wondering does this have enough bass so i don't have to get a sub with it right now? i need to save up for one if i have to. i'm doing r-n-b/rap vocals/productions. what do you think?so is this a good setup? and if it is, can y'all help me hook it up right? i kinda have an idea but i just want to be sure. thanks for all you're help
 
Doesn't the Tascam FW1844 function as a control surface and a firewire interface. Do you really need both the Tascam and the MOTU 896? Also, I might hold off on the Focusrite until I tried the stock preamps in the Tascam. If they are bad, then look for an external preamp and try to find out if there's enough of a quality difference between the Tascam and the Voicemaster. Finally, post up on the mic forum or do a search to see if there is enough difference between the AT4040 and the Shure KSM32. You might want to look at the KSM 44 or maybe something completely different.
 
yeah, i was thinking about getting a different mic, maybe a baby bottle or a rode or something. i'm not sure. the reason why i want to get the mic pre and the motu is cause i thought it'll be better than what the tascam would come with. cause i was thinking if i don't like it, i'll just sell them or something. i mean, i got the money anyway, i figured i should buy what i want to buy now, rather than just spend the money on other stupid crap. what do you think?
 
You dont need to get the Motu if you get the Tascam..... Read on....

Now getting another pre-amp and microphones can never hurt if you have the money then get what you like just make sure you A and B them.

Its better to have two totally different mic's than two on the same level, that way you can change it up a bit. I belive that the Focusrite is a better pre-amp but for R&B and rap I would look into a Avalon 737 and a Rode NTK, nice set-up for your genre of music....( same as mine). The Event ps 8's will do you just fine(take it that you have some room treatment done!!!) you wont need a sub.

You have Sonar so you could get a Mackie Control Universal control surface a Delta 1010 and the Avalon, Rode NTK combo and you will be good to go!

i have some room treatment done. my studio is 9 x 11. i have 96sq ft of the walls covered with studio foam. even about 8 sq ft on the ceiling. should i buy difusors to put on my ceiling too? i was thinking of that and also buy one 2x4 elite foam pad and put it on the wall that my monitors will be facing. is that a good idea? oh and since i didn't have any bass traps, i tried to used the 2 x 4 studio foam on the corners of the walls and it helps some. should i buy the real ones or no? thanks for your help

Not a bad idea, except that it's a very expensive and non-portable option to the Tascam, which also has available Sonar templates.
 
i think i'm going to hold off on the rode ntk for now and try to get more sound treatment for my studio. i mean i'm very happy with the sound i'm getting from my at4040. maybe next paycheck i'll get it. as for now, i'm going with carter and getting a avalon 737 and going with more flexiblity and getting a tascam 1884 and the monitors. any objections?
