Can you hear the difference?

Take a listen to both of these. Both were encoded with a Fraunhofer codec in High Quality mode, but one is 128kbs and the other is 192kbs.

Of particular interest is the chorus and and the heavy horn hits. You can actually hear a heightened compression during those parts on the 128kbs version that is nowhere as obvious in the 192kbs version.

(128kbs)

(192kbs)

I point this out because, well, many of you post stuff that is encoded at 128kbs, and I think it really detracts from the overall quality. I know that some places will not allow higher encoding rates (which really sucks the big titty...). But hey guys, if you can, encode at at least 192kbs to remove the artifacts if you are looking for more valid feedback. And PLEASE use Fraunhofer codecs! :)

well, my 24bit .wav files suck so I dont think 128kbps would kill me.....but I do use 192 and can hear a slight difference in the high end of my stuff, though i didnt listen to yours......

hey, maybe if i use 128 id have something to blame my suckiness on......

I encode mine in VBR at 128 min. true stereo, no filtering.

Works for me. ;)

I agree that CBR at 128 ain't so great.

What's wrong with Lame, Ed. That's what's supplied in Wavelab, and there's at least some knowledgeable people who think it's better than Frauhofer.

Someone asked Phillippe (Wavelab's creator) if he used Lame because it was better than Frauhofer. He was honest enough (or PC enough) to say that it had more to do with royalties than quality. :)

Definitly sounds better at 192.
(Great recording and mix BTW!)

I use a 192 VBR with Lame.
Why do you prefer Fraunhofer?

Do you use a straight encoding or a variable bit rate?

Thanks,
Pete

Lame with vbr sounds pretty good to me. The net should just go ogg anyhow.

Doing the A/B thang it's pretty subtle to me.

But I figure: If you're in for 5 MB, what's 7.5MB?

If you are worried about that 2.5 MB then you really wouldn't be bothering with the 5MB file either, eh?

I post in 192. Broadband obviously makes that choice a little easier, but like drstawl said, what's another 2.5 mb? Even on Studiophiles I can hear less holes in the sound on your 192 file.

I can hear them... The "harsh" is different in 192, much alot better...
BTW Ed, what a killer bass sound you got up there... This is BASS as it should be !!!! Maaan... nice track... very nice track... :)

It is a custom made bass by David King, some guy in Seattle. Ran into a Hugh's and Kettner Bass Bass 800. The head was DI'ed via a Countryman DI, and the bass itself was DI'ed via an ART MP.

Yeah, I sort of like it. :D

Sounded very nice..Good players!..Good vibe!..Good recording!..On my "lovely crappy walkmen style headphones" it sounded more"open"and defined..Dammit I've got to get a better comp. and speaks:( :)

128 screws up cymbals too. I still post at 128, but that's b/c I'm hoping to lure people into criticizing those cymbals...that are part of a loop that sounds perfect here, lol.
