I understand things like the number of tracks useable n stuff depends on the spec of your machine, the machine i will shortly have is a P4 2.66, two 80bg HD's, probably 512mb of ram, maybe a gb. Is this machine going to struggle full songs with 10-12 tracks??

Yes - that machine will be fine.

As a reference, I have the below spec:
AMD Athlon XP2400+ (T-bred at 266MHz FSB)
512MB PC2700 RAM
M-Audio Delta66

The machine handles anything I throw at it to be honest.
I don't tend to use fantastic numbers of tracks as this can make mixing tricky (for me and my small brain anyway), but I have used as many as 20 and haven't had any problems yet :)

I'm using an Athlon 2500+ (333 FSB Barton core), 512mb DDR400, Delta 44. Used 25+ tracks without trouble other than my hard disks being full!! Found out in the process that if you have more than a dozen tracks (not counting separate drum mics etc) then you've almost certainly tried to hard and missed the point of the song!

I have an AMD Athlon 1900+ (1.6 GHz) with 1 gig RAM and a Audiotrak INCA88 soundcard. In the last song I made, I'm running 35 tracks at once...
