Sounds like either a REALLY legit-sounding excuse for the high price, or a true story. what is it?

-callie-
It's a story I made up. Sorry, but that why I said "good story" at the end, however, it would seem to be the only legit way I can think of that these things are 6 grand.

Some people are stupid with money to burn...

How come I never run into them? ....sigh

I'd really like to know the mind set of this stupid fuck who bid that amount.

Maybe it's a front for drugs...tear out the guts......fill it with plastics bags. I agree where are these people. I was looking through ebay the other day found a maestro echoplex going for $600. You know what happened to mine......couldn't get tapes...so it met it's demise. What a pity!!

that's ok...call it the learning curve.....this super highway of information has probably has made a fortune for some people who never get rid of anything....these pack rats are the future millionaires!!!

I put this to the guys on rec.audio.pro. Here are some of the responses:

"The only thing I can figure is that there are collectors out there who want
a complete set of Aiwa recorders, for reasons known but to themselves, and
this is the one that shows up the least often, so the collectors go berserk
when it appears. Like my friend whose best pal had the only Muddy Waters
record he didn't own. Real collectors are NUTS."
--Paul Stammler

"Must be either a Japanese collector or someone's pulling our leg.
There's no practical or technical reason for this to be worth any more
than $50. Notice that the auction ended early to sell to the current
high bidder. Even the first bid of $250 was outrageous."
--Mike Rivers

"He's from Japan, so maybe he made a mistake on the exchange rate?!? The
seller made out like a bandit, regardless."
--Allen Corneau

"It's being used as part of a money-laundering scheme. I bet a dollar."
--Scott Dorsey

There is a simple answer to why these decks are going for stupid money, it's all to do with Ritchie Blackmore, guitar player with Deep Purple and Rainbow. He used a modified Aiwa TP1011 in his signal chain to create an echo effect but the tape deck also added a sharpness, a sparkle to the guitar signal in a way that nothing else can, nobody has been able to replicate the sound with any other piece of equipment.

As a result these decks are being hunted worldwide by Blackmore fans. If you've got one you can just about name your price and some idiot will pay it. Around $8,000 is the usual price they go for:confused:

This listing (9700199726) has been removed or is no longer available. Please make sure you entered the right item number.
If the listing was removed by eBay, consider it canceled. Note: Listings that have ended more than 90 days ago will no longer appear on eBay.

The last one to sell on Ebay went for $3.732,00, item number 350151734935. That's the lowest price I have ever seen one go for. The one at the start of this thread did go for just under $8000.

Exhibit A, Ritchie Blackmore with the Aiwa TP-1011

i'm going to admit my ignorance of richie blackmores signature sound,
but this points out how unimaginative people are in general.

I mean he used some cheap stuff he had lying around and played around with it until it sounded good to him.

People! Take the same approach.
Look around. There are millions of things available to make and alter sound with.
Just grab what's handy and make music.
This obsession to recreate a moment in time is pointless.
Do you think he tours with the same set up today? ( he might, i'm too lazy to look it up)
And arent they the group that insisted on the first record that the bass player be allowed to continue playing through the shitty guitar amp he had been using because he was used to it?

I'll bet most of the people buying this kind of collector type junk never
even plug it in. They just look at it.

It may take a lifetime to find your own voice, but that is what you should strive for IMHO

You're right there zorf, even if they have "the same tape deck" as Blackmore his was considerably modified by his tech at the time, Dawk Stillwell. Nobody knows just what components were changed and for what, Dawk Stillwell has been asked often enough but it's one thing he won't divulge.

As for his current set-up, he rarely plays the Strat now, he's into all this artsey fartsey folk music with mandolins, lutes and God knows what else. Good luck to him, he's made his money and can do what he wants to now.

wow, thats another level of goofy- buying the deck
knowing that many others have tried and
couldnt get it to work.
of course if you could get it to work, tit would all be worth it because you could coax these subtle Blackmore sounds as shown here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aQ9P4qi8uo

Just wanted to add that tape deck makes several appearances in this tape.

This must of been the main inspiration for spinal tap.
