Need a decent "budget" room mic to pick up the distance/ambiant sound of the guitar amplifier.

What types, makes/models should I be looking at?

The #1 question to U is....What is your budget????????

The Shure SM57's and 58's are great mics @ $75-90.00. Check out Rode NT1's or AKG c1000 @ 199.00 ea. Both feature excellent response and clarity with the Rode giving extra warm and smooth sound.
Or better yet, wait for a response from Recording Engineer
as he is the resident "Brainiac" on mic's here.
Peace and Good Luck.

Best advice for that price range is get the store to let you try them out and pick the one that best suits your needs... at that price point, the level of quality from mic to mic (even by the same manufacturer) may differ significantly....

I have an SM57 for the close mic, but I didn't think that or the 58 would be right for the room mic.

To all:
Don't I need an omnidirectional for the room mic?

I use both AKG c1000s and RODE NT1 and I would tend to think that NT1 with it's sensitivity would be the first choice of a room mic. It can be had for $169 from zzounds (less than the c1000s) and is a nice all around mic. I would strongly suggest getting a shockmount with NT1, though, cuz it'll hear everything (picks up vibrations through stand)! Mine are on order from http://www.tensimount.com.

However c1000s offers changeable patterns - cardioid and hypercardioid. I have no complaints about this mic, but so far I haven't said "wow, what a lovely mic", unlike the NT1, which is very sweet on vocals. Maybe I haven't found an apropriate use for it yet, so far I tried it on vocals and acoustic guitars.

Other Than What's Been Suggested

IF you can go up to about $150US higher, you might consider an Earthworks SR71 for $350US, Oktava MC-319 from The Sound Room only for $280US, or an Oktava MC-012 from The Sound Room only for $300US.

Personally, if I had to make a choice, I'd probably go for the MC-012. It's SO versitile!

And no, it doesn't necessarily need to be an omni. What pattern you end-up using will mostly be greatly determined on how live/dead your room is.
