Can It be done??

Im new to this site. So far I love it!!! Equipment is a dell computer 1.46ghz with 1.99ghz of ram, two presonus firepods and cubase le that came with the firepods. Questions: 1) is there any way to record more that 8 channels at a time. 2) should i use exteral effects on guitar or plugins. 3) Drums sound "distant" instead of "in your face" .. thanks for any suggestions. I have my first band coming to record next month. They understand how "green" i am at recording but are willing to give me a shot since the price is right!!

Yes, you should be able to record more than 8 channels, however it will require a software upgrade. Any form of Cubase le will record a max of 8, so you will have to jump past the "free" version level.

As far as the external effects go, if you have great sounding pedals, I'd go for that, but if you have some decent sounding plugins, they are the best way to go, since you don't have to record your tracks wet. ( meaning you can add or remove the effect anytime in the recording process)

For the distant sound of the drums, #1 solution, mic everything closer. Distant mics = distant drums + more reverb

Any advice on guitar effects plugins. Every one i have for Distortion and anp modules sound very harsh. I have the drum mics as close as possible. Any other suggestions. Overhead placement perhaps? When i turn off the overheads, the drums sound much better but i loose the cymbals.
