can i really cover all my toms with one condenser?? im new....

hello, another newbie here.
im just starting out recording properly.
i only have one dynamic mic, a work dm-55.
i cant even remember where it came from....

i need some mics for drums and electric guitar.
my music is loud, heavy, dense, thick noise/drone rock.
i tune my guitar to b.

ive been looking around a lot of forums and it seems like i could get

1 shure sm57
1 akg d112
1 akg c1000

and thats all id need.
shure on the snare, d112 on the kick and the c1000 to catch ALL my toms overhead??
will that really work? a lot of my drumming is very tom-based.
(think tool ideally)
my budget doesnt stretch much further than that...

ive had the luxury of borrowing a d112 for a bit. its great, im actually gonna use it as a guitar mic too.

Yes, it will work, but if you are heavy on the toms, you probably want both individual control of their volumes and the ability to pan left and right indepentantly, which this will not give you. My drummer plays a 4 pc. kit, w/one rack tom and one floor tom, and I get a great sound with mics on kick, snare and 2 overhead, and lately I have been adding a hi-hat mic. This works OK because there are only two minimally used toms.

Well, one for all THREE toms would be kinda hard - you would have to rely on a nice pair of overheads for all the toms if that were the case. Usually if you're low on funds, TWO mics, placed in between each pair of toms, works, so if you can afford another mic, I'd recommend doing that.

Instead of the c1000, get a pair of MXL 603s ($200 for the pair), or even a pair of Behringer ECM8000 for overheads ($100 for the pair). A pair of overheads will give you a better stereo image of both your cymbals and toms. Miking each tom with shitty mics will just give you more shitty sounds to deal with at mixdown. Focus on getting a good sound with as few mics as possible. Then, if you feel you need more control over the toms, you can add mics as needed.

ok cool thanks for the advice, i think i might just change the akg1000 to the 2 ecm8000s
im sure they arent AS good, but they still are good yeah?

Back slowly away from the C1000s. It is overly harsh.

Try the MXL 603s if you can get a pair. If not I'd be looking at a single LDC like a Studio Projects B1. The 57 and the D112 are a good call.

The ECM8000s is an omni pattern mic. A pair will be nice for OH but will be less forgiving if your room sound is bad or if your drums and hardware aren't in ship shape.
