Can i mic a bass drum with a shure 58, and can i use my condensoner mic for overhead or ambience recordings of the drums.

shure...(ha ha)
Take the pop screen off of the 58 first though...

Hay S8-n,
When you take the pop filter off a 58 does it make it the same as a 57 (no pop filter/ extended bass)?

I cant tell a differenve between a 57 and a ball-less 58. And I like the sound of a 57/58 on kick.. In fact, The kickdrum on the Red-Hot Chilli-Peppers Blood sugar Sex Magik was recorded with a SM57... And it wasnt because they couldnt afford good mics...
I use an AT pro25 and a sm58 simultaneously on the kick... The 58 captures the attack better than the pro25 to my ears.

I wouldn't want to mike a bass drum with a 58. You will not like the results.

If it;s all you got, then try to run it through as much EQ as you can.

Otherwise, get an Audio technica ATM-25, the cheapest decent bass drum mic I know of.

I asked some guy who works for an audio company, and he said that the wiering of the 57 and 58 is the same but the capsual is different. i don't know how true it is though.
