Or it doesnt work that way?

Thanks!

This would probably be better off in the Pro Tools Forum, but we're here anyway!

An MBox2 mini has 2 inputs total. You have your input 1, which is XLR or Line/DI, so as you know, a mic with an XLR cable will work fine with that. If you want another mic on it, you will probably have to buy a preamp, and take the line out of the pre into the Input 2 Line/DI on the Mbox. If it's a two channel (or more) preamp, you can plug in as many mics as the pre can handle, and take the line out (AFAIK) into the Line input on the Mbox, but the multiple signals will be summed onto one track, and you won't be able to separate them.

What I would recommend doing is selling your Mbox 2 Mini, and buying an MBox 2 (regular or pro). With the MBox2, you can plug in two mics, and if you want to upgrade further, you can buy a two channel pre-amp with S/PDIF outputs, which will give you four inputs at a time as follows:

Mic 1 - Mic input 1 on MBox
Mic 2 - Mic input 2 on MBox

Mic 3 - Mic input 1 on preamp
Mic 4 - Mic input 2 on preamp

Mic 3 and 4 will be sent out the S/PDIF output on the pre, into the S/PDIF input on the MBox2, and once you've set up your I/O correctly, they will show up as two separate inputs in Pro Tools.

Phil thanks a lot for that detailed post! If I didnt get paid minimum wage I would definitely upgrade Mbox's... Unfortunately Im stuck to buying some sort of pre amp for cheap to use as a second mic input...

I like the idea of coming out of a 2 channel pre through spdif and getting 2 more channels that way, but of course my mini doesnt have s/pdif...

Im glad that you can come line out of a pre amp though, so I can definitely start recording stereo acoustic as well as stereo electric from my amp...

Any recommendations on decent 1 channel pre's that dont introduce noise when coming out 1/4"??

Or maybe I can get an XLR to 1/4 balanced, that may help with the noise a bit I think.

Thanks!

For the price you could sell your mini and get a regular, the difference in cost would probably cost the same as a cheap pre, and you're leaving yourself with more options in the future.

Phil, I guess thats a good point.... What do you think I can get for my mini? 200 bucks?

Looks like the regular Mbox is going for around 350...

Thanks!

Have a look around some 2nd hand selling websites (ebay etc.) and see what kind of prices MBox Minis are going for. That should give you an idea. I've never bought one 2nd hand so I couldn't tell ya :o
