Can I add plugins that end with .dll into Audition?

I used Cool Edit Pro 2.0 for years and recently upgraded to Adobe Audition. I know that "Refresh Effects List" in Edit Waveform view will update plugins that were installed on your computer. I downloaded some seemingly nice plugins in .zip form and extracted them into the "vstplugins" folder in the Adobe directory but they still don't show up. In these .zip files are two files; one is a .dat and one is a .dll. My question is are these even compatible with Audition? And if so, how can I make them show up as usable plugins?

Audition 1.5 supports VST plugins - well, most - but not VSTi instruments. You can create your own VST folder and add it to the list of those that Audition scans, if you wish. Unsupported plugins will often appear in the 'unsupported' list, but not always.

What plugins are you trying to use?

You can create the VST folder anywhere on your hard drive. When you go into the effects list there is an option that says something like "add VST directory", then you just browse and find your folder, then it will ask you to refresh your effects list. The "unsupported" list should be somewhere in the effects menu. Usually VSTi will show up here if you have them installed.

I tried the "Exciter" effect and found that it appeared in Audition under the name of "Container - Synthedit" - and it failed to work (or so it seemed). I believe that's not uncommon with Synthedit-created effects and Audition.
