Can anyone make me an recommendation on a channel strip?

Hi,

I'm fairly new to this forum and started to get some really useful information here.

Also I'm trying to put some new recording gig together for my band and looking for a channel strip.

I'm using Rode K2 Mic and Mbox2 Pro.

The budget is $2000

Would you guys be able to give me some recommendations?

Personally? I'd avoid the whole "channel strip" garbage out there and just go for good preamps. That said, Langevin DVC. Hard to beat in that price range.
 
I was actually leaning towards a good preamp rather than a channel strip.

btw what do you guys think about geoff daking mic pre 4 with some good eq to go with?

In that price range can you buy a "bad" pre?

Sure, Focusrite VM Pro. Great strip that has a steep learning curve. I use it alot. Joe Meek VC1. Powerful strip for some great color. I use these plenty when I record digital. The FR is really clean and the Joe Meek does bass and drums nicely.

For mic pres alone: Avalon= clean and stackable over tons of tracks.

I have to look at my rack for more info on what I use and own. I am kind'a in a hurry.

I don't know, unless a person has used some channel strips it is hard to say what is garbage and what is not. The two I listed have done really well on many sources and I have a rack full of great mic pre-amps (too many).

Depends on how serious one is in the recording game. Channel strips are just the ticket for the occasional home recordist. They have the functions built in and are a good value for them. Investing in a long term adventure, I agree with you wholy. Depends on the situation.

The one thing I hope will happen is that there is a mass market dump on eBay for the FR VMpro because I want a second one!

+1 on the Langevin DVC. It's the Langevin dual mic pre + eq plus the Langevin ELOP-- both of which cost >$1000 each, put together into one unit that sells for $1800. There are two versions and all of the second version units (it's been several years since the change) allow you to use the pre/eq section separate from the optical limiter section. The preamps sound very good. The eq is simple high/low shelving, but very useful. The limiter is simple-- kind of LA-3A like without the output transformer, relatively transparent and it is really hard to make it sound bad. I have a couple of slightly sluttier and higher gain preamps (Avedis MA5 and LaChapell 583s) that I tend to use most of the time because I don't track too many sources at once, but I will often put the DVC limiter on for vocals or other sources that can benefit.

Thanks for you reply, and actually I have almost decided to pick up the chameleon lab 7602. I have read good reviews and heard that it was really the best bang for the buck. (I could really use the money left over)
