Can anyone help me please? NO Recording level control!!

I hope some one can help me?

I just set up my DAW with guitar tracks pro. Everything seems to work OK accept for I have no volume control to adjust the recording level? Is there a missing file or a conflict?

I arm the track and get a signal, but when I go down to the bottom of the list and click on volume I just get a message rather than the volume control slider.

This is the message:

Volume Control

There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices from the add/remove hardware wizard in the control panel.

I am using a dedicated computer for the DAW. No fax modem or anything else?

It is a Pentium III 600 MHz computer with Windows 2K, cakewalk guitar track pro and an audiophile 24/96 sound card.


does anyone know what I am missing or what I need to do or reconfigure?

You control your RECORDING volume from your preamp (or mixer). There are no recording volume controls in Sonar. Just a playback volume control. There are, however, recording meters in Sonar to help you set the record volume properly.

...he must mean Windows mixer, right ? Have you reinstalled it again ? When you have some card just be put on your system, Windows will detect it and try to install the driver from their database. However, when you install the proper driver comes with your card, the Windows driver still "hide" beside. If the new driver somehow "ain't match" with the old, sometime the old ones needs to be uninstalled first, then reinstall it again. Hope it helps.

Do you mean that my system is working OK? And I am not suppose to have a recording volume control on the windows program or guitar track pro?

I am suppose to control the recording level from the mixer?

Is this correct?

The Cakewalk manual even says to set the record level with the "Wndows Mixer"

Well, is the Windows Mixer installed and functional? Are you adjusting the Line Input (or whatever) at the Recording-section of the Windows mixer?

The error-message you get is spot on, but I can say it one more time if you like : There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices from the add/remove hardware wizard in the control panel.

There's obiously something wrong with either the Windows Mixer or your soundcards drivers! What to do? Reinstall the Windows Mixer and/or reinstall the souncard-drivers.

I don't want to sound like a jerk here, but the errormessage told you what was wrong and how to deal with it... That's was maybe why people was so confused with your question.

I'll take a look and see if I can reinstall the Windows mixer, maybe thats the problem.

Do you know if I can just install the mixer or do I have to reinstall the whole Windows 2K OS?

I really do appreciate your advice.

Just for fun, check the Device Manager (Right-Click on My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager). Is there any icons with an (!) in yellow added to them?
