Can an Audiophile 2496 serve all my computing needs?

I know it's basic, but:

Will an Audiophile 2496 supply all PC sound card needs such as gaming, video sound, and basic sound requirements, or will I still need a standard card in addition to my recording card?

I'd rather not have more than one card if I can avoid it.

Thanks for the education!

Well, yeah sorta. The only exception is games. I've found that the Delta series (audiophile would be included) works fine for some games, but in others you'll get lots of nasty dropouts and such. Also, it doesn't have any sort of processors (EAX, etc) like you'd find on a soundblaster which can add a bit to a game's realism.

I have a Delta1010 but use an SB Live! in the same system for games and such. Works well for me!

...and Delta cards doesn't seem to suport MIDI. No internal synth engine nor MIDI port. So if you also wanna deal with MIDI, Slack's config may do a good basic system fine.
:)

Both the Audiophile and the Delta 1010 have MIDI ports, but neither have integrated MIDI synths.

True that none of the Delta family cards have MIDI synths. Not true that they all have or don't have MIDI ports. Here's the deal:

Audiophile, Delta 1010 and 1010LT: have MIDI In/Out
Delta 44, 66 and OMNIStudio: do not have MIDI In/Out

Getting back on track........

I guess I don't really care about the quality of sound in games, video, etc. I just want it to work.

I've got integrated sound on an old Dell junker and it's fine for daily chore stuff and I just wanted to know if a high end audio card would cover those bases for me I build my new dream PC.

In all likelihood, the audio I'll be enjoying will be 90% my music and %10 chore tasks, and maybe I'll have WinAmp running in the background, or a media clip or something from time to time.

It sounds like an Audiophile 2496 would meet these basic requirements, with an occasional blip, and save me the hassle of dumping my time and moolah into a junker card that may need drivers that I don't want to entertain. Yah?

Thanks again. The more replies the merrier.

P.S. I thought that the MIDI in the 2496 might come in handy one day when I attempt to teach myself a bit more.

Yeah for everyday stuff it's totally fine! Great even!

I have a 2496 installed and it has worked fine with every game I have tried. One problem is that it doesn't have an analog connection for running a line from your CDROM drive, like game cards do. This only matters if you want to play audio music from your computer CD-ROM while gaming, which is not a big deal.

A more serious problem for me is that the 2496 still refuses to work as a 24 bit card, it only records and plays back in 16 bit. But as I've said before, this seems to be a conflict in my system, or perhaps a bad card - I have not run accross anyone else having the same problem with a 2496.

...hehehe Slack & Alchuck rulez.
I got Delta 66 anyway, that's why I thought none of their familly suport MIDI. Thanks for corecting me... ;)
