Hello all who've participated.
I've employed ALL suggestions to come up with the version at the link below.
The result is far better than the original & nowhere near the camel the horse committee came up with.

Link to revised version is now

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3398745&q=hi

I've learnt quite a lot along the way - about sound, texture balance & a few things in Pro Audio I hadn't a clue about previously - most specifically about auxillary effects & even better automation of auxillary 1 & 2 effects.
Thus I've spent the 1st 1/2 of my vacation learning something.

Ido - I managed to apply stereo chorusing to the guitar but was fairly ginger with it 50% send & the same return.

Thankyou X 1000 to those who made suggestions. each & every one was valid.
IF this mix doesn't meet your expectations please let me know what is/was needed & I'll log it in my suggestion box for future reference.
thanks heaps.
Cheers

Sounds good and punchy man. I like the mix. As a curiousity, have you tried to do the chorusing thing with the vox? As an effect, it might sound cool. It may not work well, just a thought on some interesting FX on this.

Anyway, I think you mixed this pretty well. I like the way the bass pokes out every so often. Has a good punch.

Dogman,
I did apply a little chorus to the vox in the chorus - sorry that reads badly - but again timidly.
Thanks for the response & suggestion. Now I know how to use it as an auxS/R I'll be able, in future, to add FX as required rather for the duration of a piece. This learning things is powerful.

Sounding good now rayC.

Only one minor fact, I think the vocals could be raised in volume by even just 1db.

Nice work!

Gorty :)

Hey man, cool. :)

After the solo, in the second half, the vox are lower than they are in the first half. In the first half they're upfront telling a story and in the second half they're lost behind the music.

If this was intentional, then I'd say, go with the same vol. for both. I like the volume in the first half.

Have fun.

Great sounds all around ;) The only thing I'd recommend is to raise the vocals just a tad, maybe add a little more thickness to them.
Sounds great though ;)

I love this song!! I love your accent!! :D

Yep, the vocals could come up.

Is that a sax?!!!! Kick ass!!

Love the bass too, and the beat period!! :)

MORE VOXXXXXXXX as requested.

Hello Folks,
Ummm, I agree. I discovered that the automation on the mix had a problem in it that cut the main vox after the solo - I flicked a little too hard with the erase tool & took out the next set of markers -DOH!.
I fixed that, I hope, & lifted the vox through just a hair. Hopefully thsi will be closer to your expectations.
true-eurt, Terry - the sax/vocalist co-composer will be very impressed with your comments.
SnakeDog5050, in raising the vox & also applied more chorus to thicken them.
bigbubba, I looked & found the automation glitch - since I only learnt how to today I'm not unhappy that I goofed. thanks for pointing it out.
Gorty, 1 db done & done.
Dogman, I added more chorus as noted above.
Go to the same link if you have the inclination.
ACTUALLY BIGM REPORTS AN ERROR SO I'VE EDITED IN A NEW LINK BELOW:

Thanks Big
Once there you'll be able to hear the changes. Hope they are an improvement all round. I can't listen to it again today. TOO MUCH listening - I'll have read the teletext for a while to come down.

rayc, I went to check this out, and the link returned a "404 - Not Found" message (?).

Would love to hear it. :)

You've got a great mix going here RayC....

My first impression is that it is cleaner and crisper than the original mix. It sounds like you've taken the reverb out a bit and the songs sounds better a bit drier.

The vocals sound good and sit well in the mix. They're easy to hear and I can understand the lyrics but they're not too upfront, which is easy to do when trying to get them to be heard - nice job there. ;)

The guitar has a nicer tone now, still has the bite but it seems smoother. The panning is subtle but definitely has a stereo feel instead of straight down the center. Good work with the effects. :D

The sax solo is still "verby" or "roomy" for my taste, but I think it sounds way better than the original mix. I find it's a tiny bit low at the beginning but better volume-wise towards the middle and end of the solo. Just a small nit and is a matter of personal preference mainly. :)

I like the way the bass "pops" out every once in a while and is really present in the mix. Other times it sits just nicely carrying the tune. Excellent tone on that bass guitar too. Not muddy like some mixes I've heard

Overall a great result on one of my favorite tunes..... :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks Ido,
Your recco about the chorusing worked well. It's marked in my little book of what to do now.
I couldn't do much else with the sax - the 'verb is from the shower recess & tiled bathroom. It's ON TAPE. I played with a little EQing to lessen it but that thinned it out & lowered the levels so I had to give it up & live with it.
The hide & seek bass was a semi conscious decision - I couldn't make up my mind about it's prominence - being a bassist I wanted ot uP THERE but wearing my mixer hat I needed to consider the whole piece SO I let it encroach occassionally. I've not used software based compression before - I've been afraid of it mostly but it seems to have done the job on the bass.
Thank you for you kind comments & participation.
Thank you to all CCC members.

I commented earlier that Jimi's piece could do with some mastering. This piece has great musicianship like Jimi, seemingly good recording quality/sound from the source, but good do great with good production. The parts are fantastically executed, the quality of recording onto the tracks sounds good, just needs someone there preaching about how to add or subrtract or voice or stop parts within the whole to really bring the production, and the song, to the point that it is...which is a GREAT SONG, that it already is. But man, imagine what it CAN be with a little production effort behind it.

I agree TOTALLY with you premise that external ears, expertise & 'editorialism" is required.
That's my greatest problem (I know all my defects & failings - these can be worked through to degrees) but that sympatico yet firm outsider is required. Hence my recourse to this forum - excellent help too. What's lacking, as you say, is during the process expertise & intervention. I guess that's a case of taking the next BIG EXPENSIVE step from home recording isn't it?
Thank you kindly for your comments.

Thanks folks,
With the last comment in & no more suggestions I'll close the thread & move on.
I've already begun prep'ing the next piece - in a similar vein to Rev Blues - straight along rock with flute.
I'm using your ideas, thoughts & recommendations in getting this one ready. I will, however, take it to about the same stage - levels set & mono mixed - before calling on the CC.
Cheers & thanks
