Calibrating VU meters

So i just wired up my vintage Simpson VU's with pheonix audio buffer cards

I need some help calibrating them.

I sent a signal Generator thru them in pro tools. Not sure which signal to use. Sine? Pink Noise? White Noise?

All signals send different levels at the same gain. Now granted I just look at the level in Pro Tools. Where do I want the PEAK to sit?:confused:
 
1.23vRMS = 0dBVU. A 1kHz tone is fine.

Where that is on your digital meters is completely dependent on how your converters are calibrated.
 
You'll need a multimeter with true RMS voltage metering in order to get the voltage reading which you can then use to calibrate the VU meters.
I just set up with some colemans VU meters and feel like a real audiophile now :)

I am questioning the accuracy of my digital signal chain. When I mix for an "average" level of -6 , peaking at about -4 it all sounds great, and shows up on my Phillips CD burner about the same. When I play a CD from a MAJOR star,not rock-n-roll , produced by N-ville's finest, the "over" light stays on for a good percentage of the CD. But the sound in no way reflects the overage. Obviously a calibration error, but how can I locate the problem? I'm using the spdif coax to link the aw2816 to the phillips. Are there calibrated CD's around to use for comparisons/calibration

The calibration could be perfectly fine. There are an alarming number of discs out there that are riddled with clipped samples. Tens of thousands of clipped samples in many cases.
