I thought it was supposed to be on the PA9 CD...

WHERE IS IT?!?!

Okay... can't find it. Is there anything like it I can get (hopefully free)?

...I think you must install CWPA9, and it will be installed as optional. They didn't put it in special folder like Audio Finder in SONAR CD... I dunno... It's been a loong time...

Damn... :(

I'm NOT gonna install PA9 on my "new" fancy system. Is there anything like it?

Moskus,

May I enquire as to why you need the Virtual Piano? I only used it once or twice with PA7 but I couldn't really see what it was for.

When I'm composing my tunes, I much prefer to sit with my guitar on my lap and transcribe using the little pencil tool in Piano Roll View.

It's tedious I know, but I don't have a MIDI keyboard.

Yeah, I know Virtual Piano sucks, but when I'm traveling with my laptop and can't justify to take a little keyboard with me, I would still like to make music... And the Piano Roll is useless (IMHO) for this kind of work.

I wouldn't say piano roll is useless. I've been using it extensively since version 3. I use it all the time and have written many, many songs including full arrangements using only it.

You can draw in velocity curves and alter timings by switching off the grid snap and all-in-all make a very realistic recording very quickly.

The improvements in show/hide other tracks at the same time is excellent and even the colouring is better now, so you can easilly see where the black notes are.

I'd really like it so you could draw in a line to create a strum effect with chords instead of working note-by-note. But I suppose I can't have everything!

However, on the whole, it gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Well, I play keys poorly. But even then I see the pianoroll only for editing mistakes, and of course changing various CC's.

But to make a complete song with it? I haven't got the patiense for that... ;)

I"ve used Sweet Little Piano and it's about the same as the Cakewalk Virtual Piano.

You'll need a loop back program like hubi's loop back device, but it is also free.

I recently spent $40 and picked up the Creative Prodikeys. It's a computer keyboard with a built in 41 key keyboard controller. Pretty cheesy feeling, but it works great. Much cheaper than the M-Audio keyboard controllers of the same size.

I'll check out that program, seems fine! :)

And...
OH MY GOD! You got the Prodikeys?!? And it's working?!? :D

Yeah, it works great actually. The keys are smaller than standard keys and they are kinda cheesy feeling. I am not a keyboard player at all, so I was not about to spend over a $100 just to do a few synth pads once in a while. Plus it's good for the kids to play and learn on. Sure beats the hell out of step recording!

Whoa...that Sweet Piano thing is pretty cool. I was just thinking yesterday that I could use something like this at work when a melody pops in my head to get it down. Usually I forget them. How can your record the midi notes from this though? I would love to save a little midi file and email it home for later developemnt. Amazing what I find here. :D

You need to set-up virtual midi ports via a program like hubi's loop back device. Then set the outs of the "piano" to something like LB1midi out. Then in your sequencer, set the midi input to LB1 input and wallah. Be sure to set the sequencer midi out to something that generates sound like a soft synth or real synth.

Thanks JR :D

I may have to give it a try if I have a chance. Being a laptop for work, they aren't too keen on installing software on there. I'll have to look around for a little midi sequencer proggy that isn't too obvious on my laptop :D. Any suggestions?
