Hello, I recently purchased a computer,Compaq 900MHz Athlon 64memory 40GB Hard Drive.At first it was going
to be the family computer. Then I read alot about recording on the computer.I became very interested.I purchased the Yamaha DS2416 sound card and the AX44 audio input[being a guitarist].I installed it successfully. Then I chose the new Sonar as my software. This is where my trouble begins.I want to record solo at first, then record my band. Can I plug my guitar straight into the AX44? or do I need a mic on the amp?Or guitar into pre amp into the AX44?.When I record direct I hear nothing,I can see the meter light moving and the track is armed. The 500 page manual is giving me a headache.I really don't know where to begin I have been at this for over a week with nothing even close to being recorded. As you can see I'm pretty green on the computer and on computer recording any insight on the matter or tips would be greatly appreciated.Thank You for your time.I know I will have to get a second computer for the kids once I get rolling

Well, a look at Musician's Friend tell me that the AX44 has "four 1/4” analog inputs (two of which can accommodate mics)." The latter two could possibly be used, but you are better off with a something to preamp the guitar.

When I record direct I hear nothing, I can see the meter light moving and the track is armed.
That card has some fancy DSP mixing features; I suspect that you are not monitoring the track through the outputs. For that matter, how are you listening? Routing everything to a pair of the card's 4 outputs? Could it be you're routing your monitored signal out an output that's not in use?

The 500 page manual is giving me a headache. I really don't know where to begin I have been at this for over a week with nothing even close to being recorded.

Relax, take your time. Get your card set up and understand its routing and connections. There are doubtless other DSP Factory onwners that can give you more specific directions but read your unit's manual and check Yamaha's website for more info. Once you can get signals into and out of the card, do all the SONAR tutorials; then do them again. It's a bit puzzling at first but like any puzzle the pieces do fit together with a little effort.

Thanks for your response AlChuck.Yes the AX44 has 4 inputs,2 of which are for line or mic.4 outputs and an output for the headphones.I have been using the headphones for the monitoring. The DS2416 also has 2 in's and out's for midi and audio each. They are internally connected together.I have no connections externally to the DS2416.At this point I'm only trying to record audio.
I will definitely go over the manual and tutorials again and again.I will also check Yamaha's web site and dig a bit deeper. It is a bit confusing at first but I know eventually I'll get it down.I've read alot of your respones on other issues and have got alot of really good information as well as others, I thank you once again.
