I use Cakewalk HomeStudio9 on my computer and whenever I save a project on my hard drive and go back later and try to open it up I receive an error message saying that the missing files could not be found. I'm asked if I wish to locate the missing files, but they're not around. I've noticed that a separate message comes up for each track I've recorded in the project. Even when I record to a disc(3.5) the same thing still happens. What can I do to fix this problem?

The project files do not save audio in them, only pointers to the audio, which is stashed in Cakewalk's wave directory. So if by some chance you move the files so that they path to the audio data becomes "wrong," it cannot find the data to fill in the audio tracks.

Usually this should not happen unless you somehow clean out the files in the audio directory. It's supposed to be aware enough to keep the data for all project files it knows about. But I guess if you put those files in other directories than the Cakewalk project directory, how does it know? So if you do a "clean audio disk" or whatever that maintenance process is called, it thinks some or all of your audio data has been orphaned and deletes it.

Cakewalk has a Audio Finder Tool at their website that might help you tie things back together if the data is still there.

For archiving projects, save them as bun files. This embeds all the digital audio into a single file. Be aware that it can be very large if you have many tracks.
