How is this book? Has anyone here read it, and most importantly did it help you out? I'm thinking of picking it up, but if it wont help that $22 could go towards gear :)

I have it for sale if you want it....

I bought Cakewalk Power in November new. It is still in great condition. If you want it, I'll sell it for $20 and I'll even pay for the shipping.

I just need to say that I've learned everything I know by playing with the software. I think manuals can be a good tool, but a poor substitute to discovery.

I bought Sonar Power and Im very happy w/ the book. He (Garrigus) explain things in easy to understand terms. Between the book and the web, you'll find out everything you need to know!

The ProRec site has some great tutorials on FX and Mastering:

For example, do a search on EQ or just go through the list of in depth articles written for the Home Rcording student by industry prof's. I have prionted them out and use them as a reference source.

I tend to agree with Pinky though, hands on and the web is where I get my learning done. But the book is highly regarded.

best book ive ever bought....
my other book was Dr. Suess' cat in the hat..... but i highly reccommend sonar power for ease of use.

Good book. Scott Garrigus, the author, does a good job of explaining things in a simple way so that you get a better understanding of how Sonar works. The original manual can be a little confusing at times. I think it's worth the money.
So get it, NOW!

It's better for understanding how Cakewalk works in laymans terms. The tutorials are set up for practical applications and aren't as cryptic as those found the Cakewalk manual. I only wish there was some sort of Roland Power book out there because their manuals need serious help.

DITTO,you have to learn how rolands equipment works before you can understand the manual!

Double ditto about the Roland manuals. Sheesh.

I bought Sonar power and I can say it reads better than the manual. Don't know if I've learned $30 worth more than I already knew, but if I had less experience, definitely. This is not say I know it all.

I move slowly through software, digesting it in bites. As I go forward, I'll reach for Sonar Power rather than the manual, and in time will pick up on the rest.

Garrigus has a very good style. I recommend it.
