Hi, I just bought Cakewalk HS 4 and I noticed that one of the templates that it contains is a " stereo mastering" template. It contains the FX Dynamics, Parametric EQ, and FX 2 Tape Simulator effects.

I am just wondering if anyone in here has ever used this mastering template and if they did what they thought of it and how they used it.

Yes people have used it, yes they thought it sounded better and yes, real mastering engineers laughed at them...

I would suggest that it isn't the quality of the template or the plug-ins, it is the quality of the ears using them that makes the difference. So said, there is nothing wrong with using the template to "finalise" some of your tracks.

To equate it with real mastering engineer or real mastering tools however, would be fallacious.

As a general rule I don't like the FX Dynamics and try and avoid using it. The parametric EQ is ok, but the Sonitus stuff sounds better to my ears. The tape simulator I think can sound OK, but I normally route through it as another buss during the mixing process, not finalising/"mastering".

Bottom line is play with it and try and learn what it is they are attempting to achieve. The best guide I can point you to in relation to the "whats" of mastering is the iZotope Ozone Mastering Guide - check it out here => http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/OzoneMasteringGuide.PDF

No worries mate!

Whereabouts are you on the South Coast? I just spent the weekend down at my grandparent's place at Culburra, (near Nowra).
