Anyone have like a "cheat sheet" for Cakewalk 9, how to get the most of it for a nOOb? Especially effects because when I use them in cakewalk it really drops the volume level and screws the sound up. I am trying to figure out what the "basic" effects are for most parts of a song: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals, etc.

Here's my first tip:

Don't worry about effects yet. Learn the software and, more importantly, the physical parts of the process like arrangement, mic placement, what sounds good in what context, what mics sound good on what, etc..

I've been using Pro Audio 9 for almost 4 years. The more I do, the less need I seem to have for effects. I'll use EQ, compression, and a touch of reverb here and there.

About the volume dropping when you use fx, I have no idea why that would happen, unless your parameters cause a loss of volume (like cutting broad swatches of freqs in EQ).

Thanks for the advice. I go direct with my acoustic work. It's the mic placement for vocals that I really need to work on. I have a cheap $100 Oktava consensor microphone (it works!) and need to work on how to use it and here it should be placed. I have a pop screen and stuff. I am new so I am just learning how to record.

I have written one song which I'll post in a couple weeks when I have my new mic preamp and compressor installed. That will definitely help a lot!

Appreciate the advice.
