I just got a flyer from Guitar Center. Cakewalk 9
is now only $179, deluxe $199. With the
Deluxe, you can upgrade to SONAR for $99.
So one can get Sonar for $298.

I paid $379 for Cakewalk 9 deluxe, i think in June.
The deluxe was about $60 more than the pro 9,
probably the worst $60 I have ever spent, it sux.

I will soon get SONAR, I am sure, so it means
I will spend a total of $478 for SONAR, but
if you are staring off now it is $298 with upgrade.

That fucking sucks, but thats how it is.
If you buy SONAR brand new, I think they said
$449, so I hope I saved some of you some bucks. David

I think the SONAR XL package is worth the extra $ for upgraders. Basically it's $100 more than the standard pack, but it comes with...

(1) the ReValver guitar sim plug-in, which goes for $100 on its own
(2) supposedly the full version of Tassman (which I find hard to believe as it lists at $395)
(3) "more automatable DirectX 8.0 effects (to be announced)"
(4) "expanded PowerFX audio library with a full CD of loops"
(5) Numerical Sound Percussion Wall Loops
(6) SquareWAV Studios' Essential Rock Loops
(7) Drag & Drop Drummer Loops: Rock, Hip Hop, Reggae, Guitar, and Bass
(8) Sonic Networks' Sonic Implants SoundFont library...

plus there's the inevitable tease of "more features to be announced."

Definitely more useful stuff than the Deluxe package provided; it's more like the Pro Suite pack.

I couldn't wait, I just went to Cakewalk earlier today and plunked down my $199... gulp... wait'll my wife finds out...

Yup Al, the SONAR XL looks pretty decent, I will
probably be going that route too.

When I got Cake 9 Deluxe, my girlfiend actually
surprised me with it, bless her. I didnt even
know the deluxe existed, so I was pretty stoked.

Great Ceasars Ghost, what a waste! Videos from
the 40's of guys shoving billiard balls in there
mouth? What the hell were they thinking, how
could any musician use those goofy videos?
Oh well, I put the CD in my "box of misfit toys",
which is much larger than it should be.

I must agree.

Cakewalk has definitely made many of us feel very foolish with their boneheaded pricing structure!
About a month ago they ran a special on upgrading to Pro Suite for $149. I went for it, and now I feel burned. For that same money, I could have almost upgraded to SONAR XL, which apparantly has most of the same stuff.
As far as the deluxe CD with the loops and such, I am a little leary. I must agree w/ DavidK: the Musician's Toolbox was a joke. I have got ZERO use out of any of that crap. Most of the loops and such were just teasers anyway, to lead you into spending even more money.
I've been w/ CW since 3.0, but I'm feeling more and more bamboozled all the time by CW's bogus upgrade/ pricing scheme, I'm starting to wonder what else is out there.
SONAR better be one heck of a product, or I'll be Cakewalking right out the door.

Aaron,

Only a month ago? You should talk to someone over there at Cakewalk. The announcement about SONAR came out only a few weeks ago. Often when a sw company upgrades a product, they "grandfather" customers who bought the older version recently (like, within the previous month or two or three), unaware that a brand-new release was around the corner. You might be able to get the SONAR XL upgrade for the $50 difference... it's worth checking it out, and keep at it a while if they resist, because it's definitely something pretty standard that one should be able to expect from a decent company... it might take a little persistence, but I suspect you might succeed.
