Firstly, you're not giving enough information.

How much RAM do you have?
What size HDD and what speed?
What's your OS?
Which driver are you using MME, WDM or ASIO?
What type of soundcard do you have?
Are you recording MIDI or audio?
Are you using HomeStudio2004?

And what is "the clicking sound"? Is it the metronome?

If it is (and you're using a SB Live/Audigy) then just select Line In as your recording source instead of "What U Hear". :)

He's recording audio tracks.

CakeWalker, I presume you are a he. If not, please forgive me. :)

When you refer to MIDI, are you trying to record from a MIDI keyboard or from a MIDI sequence you've composed?

To record MIDI tracks you will need a synthesiser to reproduce the MIDI sounds. This can be hardware or software. Sonar has the Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas (VSC) bundled to allow you to hear MIDI files. The section in the manual Tutorial 9 - Using Soft Synths explains it. That particular tutorial also covers Converting Your DXi Tracks to Audio.

HS2004 supports ASIO drivers. Does your sound card have ASIO drivers? I didn't have a huge amount of success with ASIO, but I'm sure if I could spend the time fiddling with my settings, I could get it to work just fine.

You may need to fiddle with your CakeWalk settings. Remember to run WaveProfiler though each time you change a setting.

I don't use a USB audio card myself, I seem to recall reading on various forums that some USB cards can be problematic with sequencers. Have you tried contacting your sound card manufacturer and explaining the problem?
