Under $500 Tube Mic quandry.
If you had to choose between a CAD M9 or a Studio Projects T3 which would it be or would you choose something else over these 2?
Thanks!

Got the T3 a couple of months ago. Love it. I have a MXL V77s. A bit cheaper tube mic but also very nice. I perfer the T3.

the t3 is very bright.
let that mean what it means to you.

I've got a T3 (not a bright one) NTK, V77, and a Groove Tube md1b, Thay are all great. T3 mt newest addition so it's getting the most attention but I think it will remain my fav cuz of patterns and the ability to mess with 'em (variable)

Have you put in a different tube or anything into your T3?

NOS 5 star black plate
I can't seem to locate any good tube suppliers in the UK (I'm never sure where to go when it comes to re-tubing amps either) but if I find anything that meets that description I will try it out! My T3 is fairly bright, not to a fault, but I'd be interested to see how it sounds with a different tube.

Cheers mate,
Nik

My NTK was a little bright (still is the brightest of the bunch but not to where I wouldn't use it) and stuck in a NOS Mullard and it really took the edge off to mt ears

Flip a coin. They're pretty similar.
After reading the many reviews, that's kind of what I gathered except for $200 more you get multiple patterns on the T3. Looks like the M9 at $299 including shipping would give me what I need ( a pretty decent sounding and fairly respected tube mic). I also inquired about changing out the Sovtek tube to a Mullard etc. They said no problem but it would void the 2 year warranty. SOS-The technical specifications of the M9 are similar to those for CAD's more expensive VSM1. The polar response is virtually identical to that of the VSM1 — although this might be expected, given that the capsule is of the same size and construction. Comparing the M9 with my various reference mics, principally Sennheiser MKH models and Neumann KM and TLM designs, I found it performed extraordinarily well, particularly since it cost typically half as much as the models I was comparing it to! The M9 also comfortably undercuts its nearest competitors — the Rode NTK and NTV, and the AKG Solidtube, for example. The fact that the M9 compares quite well against 'big name' mics costing twice as much also makes it an absolute steal at the asking price. I'm not saying this new CAD is better than some of the established greats — you still get what you pay for, by and large — but the sonic differential is substantially less than the money would suggest.

The CAD M9 is a great microphone, as are the other tube mics by CAD, the VSM1 and VX2. The M9 has a different capsule than the VSM1 (the VSM1 and VX2 one capsule and have similar head amps).

A better comparison, pricewise, is the CAD VSM1 and SP T3.

M9 ordered

I ordered the M9 today.
I'll let you know how it sounds in a week or so.

PS-for those who know I like to plug my personal sE Electronics mics, please recognize that I ordered a CAD mic!

The figure 8 on the T3 is great for recording acoustic guitar, if you like close miking at the 12/14 fret area. None of the boominess gets into the side of the mike.

But all of the poor off axis response of that mic does.

HOWTO change?

NOS 5 star black plate

Hi mates,

I'm interested to try to change the tubes in my T3.

Where can I get better tubes and what should I look out for? Part number, size, dimension.. etc??
Is there any soldering / desoldering involved?
Is the T3 easy to take apart?
Oh heck, can you babysit me through the process??

Thanks!!
Regards,
[Charles]

go to your search engine (yahoo, google, etc) and type in NOS 5 star black plate. 12 ay7 is a good one too although there are a lot more iffy 12 ay7's

Well!

I've done some vocal and guitar tracking this week with the CAD M9.
It has worked nicely. :D
Hi-end helps things sit just right in the mix.
A/B'd it with my SE2200-A and the M9 has a little more hi's with a different characteristic.
Keeping both fer sher!
