Good lord, that's hardly more than I bought my mxl990 for back in the day. I use the cardioid section of my m179's more than anything else that I have.

is this mic any good? compared to the other $300 price range mics

anyone ever used these as drum overheads?? I might have to go for a pair of them and give it a shot...

Haven't got that far yet but it sounds awesome as a vocal mic...

The M179 works great as an OH, or just about any drum application. Very good bass response. I expect the m177 would do so, as well.

Check out "All Right" at http://www.mattthayer.com/music.html . M179's are used in cardioid (so basically an m177 should be the same) in a spaced pair on drum overheads (placement could be better, but it's not bad). Same mic/pattern on vocals also. The mix isn't as great as it could be, but I think it'll do ok to show some of what these mics can do. Drum kit is a crappy Sunlite kit with decent heads (not sure what brand) and all Sabian cymbals except for the hat (which is the original hat that came with the kit). Recorded in a smaller to medium sized room with wood floors (my kitchen). Kick is replaced with a sample, and snare is close miked with a 57.

The Goodbye To You cover was done with the m179 in cardiod for vocals and guitars.

I use M177s as overheads as a spaced pair and I think they sound wonderful. Big fat warm tones. If I can get a drummer over, I'm gonna record something with just them to give a demo. I loooove them.

The OHs and vocal sound very nice on "All Right". Great kick sound too.

I'm about to order today...damn is gone up to $100 again! when MF will drop the price again???? I suppose to have $60 savings for 2 mics :(

Here's a little tip when purchasing reduced items at MF: Put it in your shopping cart. Very often the reduced price stays there and throughout the checkout process, even after the price goes back up.

Yep, I've done that a couple times. You can also tell them you found a better price else where and they send you a discount coupon. I did that when I bought my wife Yani sax and it saved me about $280.

I can't say I feel bad for you... they're around £170 here - thats $340ish

EDIT: oh no thats the M179.. the M177 is about $290
