Has anyone used a CAD equitek E-200 condenser mic? Are they worth it? My friend has one and says it blows away his neumann.. Whats the scoop?

Cad E-200

I don't know what Neumann your friend compared his E-200 to. Many of the new transformerless designs are not my cup of tea.

Having just repaired an E-200 I can tell you that the build quality and sound quality are not on par with any transformer balanced Neumann microphone.

The E-200 has an op amp based preamp that's powered from two internal 8.4 volt nicad batteries that are trickle charged from phantom power. The capsule appears to have an aluminum backplate and exhibits a problem found on many older mics. If you breathe too heavily on this capsule it stops working due to the moisture in your breath basically shorting the capsule. This can be controlled by using an additional popfilter and as I said many older and more expensive mics also have this problem.

Soundwise I found it to be quite neutral (boring). Similar in sound to many electret designs,

I have an E-200, it's a nice mic (I've compared it to some Neumanns... it's not really in the same league--the Neumann are much nicer). It does however sound much nicer with a tube preamp. I find the top end can be rather unflattering, the mic is very flat and if something sounds bad, the CAD won't help. I like the mic's low end much better.
The E-200 is a very quiet mic, but, if I had the money to spend over again, I'd get something else.

It still kinda holds up well for what it is, and what it was at the time. No, it's not a Neumann sound by any stretch of the imagination, but, if CAD had used the original capsules I speced for the mic (actually, I did originally call it "The Mic") instead of the Primo capsules they used, it would have been a lot closer sounding to a Neumann than it is.

The new Studio Project multi-pattern mics are a lot better value for the money, but at the time, I was pretty proud of coming up with a multi-pattern mic for the home market for under $350 with 4 patterns, bass rolloff, and level pads. And that was in 1987.

I dragged it out to compare it to the SP stuff, and while every one of the SPs beat it (I felt), it wasn't THAT bad as a utility mic perhaps.

If you can find one used for cheap, it's not a bad mic.

And timc, of course it sounds like an electret; it IS an electret. Actually, just a pair of back to back, small electret cardioid capsules made by Primo.

bass drum bass cab

bass drum bass cab.

very very good for both. if you are into sub bass.

I love CAD mikes. They push a lot of migrange, so it seems to make whatever you tracked stand out well in the mix.

I recently saw that they are now producing a dynamic stage mike like a sm58. Anyone know anything bout these?
