Between being and nothing
My local Guitar Satan, er, Center has two used ones on sale for $99.00.

Are they any good? I need something to replace my beloved Oktava MK-319 that has gone to the great microphone shockmount in the sky...

The CAD C400S is a Shanghai-built large-capsule mic virtually identical to the MXL 2001 and other similar mics. It does have an internal bass roll-off switch (you have to take the mic apart to access the switch.) There is also an LED on the front above the CAD logo. CAD imported these for a while to cash in on the Chinese Mic Craze. I have one, it's currently my only large-diaphragm mic. It's OK, I'd hazard that unit-to-unit consistency would be lacking. Try 'em out and see, if they sound OK, $99's a good deal. I like mine on my cheep $145 mandolin. ;)

I also have a C400S that I am very happy with. I picked it out after comparing sonically side-by-side with nearly every mike at GC.
I wrote brief review of my opinions on this BBS
Here:

I like very "neutral sounding" mikes. I think all the adjectives like "crisp, warm, punchy, etc. should apply to the thing you are recording...not to the mike. You opinion may vary.

Peace,
Rick

I would be ok for getting ideas down I guess. But for relase work, I would run away from this mic, unless you like harsh and boxy.

I guess this answers my question.

Well, since GC has the Oktava MK319's on sale for $149.00, gotta go back to the one you luv, right?
