what kind of cables would i want to use to go out from the M-Audio Audio Buddy, the outputs on this are 1/4 inch, into the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Sound card. The inputs on Audiophile appear to be RCA, not really sure tho.

A cable with a 1/4" jack on one end and RCA on the other.

I buy ones just like those at Guitar Center all the time for the same use (connecting my mixer and gear to the Audiophile)

mono stereo

so will that give me a one chanel mono recording since there seems to be two inputs into the audiophile. does the 1/4 inch to RCA cable split from one 1/4 inch to two RCA's?

According to the spec page at the M-Audio website, the Audio Buddy has a pair of independent 1/4" outputs - unbalanced or balanced TRS. One for each mic you have plugged into its inputs. The RCA inputs on the Audiophile are not balanced, so you need cables with one standard mono 1/4" connector on one end (just like a guitar cable) and one RCA plug on the other, not a stereo pair. You need one for each of the Audio Buddy's outputs, and you should consider them as two separate mono sources, not a stereo source. It's best to record mono tracks in your recording software and use panning and stereo effects to give your final mix its stereo image.
